Attached are pictures of my friend's Maytag dryer. It appears to be just under the 20 year mark for this section of the forum. If not, Robert, can you please move it to the Imperial forum.
First, is this a Samsung or LG built dryer?

The dryer stopped heating. He disassembled it and found a broken element wire. All the safety and temp controls were fine.

However, the inside of the cabinet and the motor and heat duct were covered in the black tar-line substance shown in the pictures. It looks like it came from some sort of sound deadening material on the drum.
It is kind of scary that this material would ever be used on a dryer and how it did not cause other issues.
There was never any odor coming from the dryer and it was drying the clothes fine until the element broke. The dryer vent was not clogged, nor does it have a long run to the outside.
So, the main question is, what would any of you do in this case if it was your dryer? Is it possible to clean it up and safely use it? Is it salvageable? Or is it time to retire it and get anew Whirlpool top lint filter fryer?

Samsung built Maytag dryer

Yes, this is a Samsung, one of the many things that helped put Maytag out of business.

I’d mostly be concerned about all the tar that’s on the motor as the motor gets reasonably hot, but it’s probably not much of a fire hazard.

They must’ve tested this design in a cooler climate like South Korea, and not in Florida, lol

Thanks, all.

John, thanks for the insight, but this unit is in a basement in Bay Shore, NY. The home is Air conditioned, and the basement never gets as hot as here in Florida.
And Pierre, I already told him to get a Whirlpool clone like the Maytag you suggested, bet even an Amana or Estate dryer with the lint filter on top is the way to go.

One thing I notice (unless you cleaned it after taking it apart) is the lack of lint buildup inside the machine (if you can look past the tar explosion on everything)..I guess that's because it vented directly to the outside.. I guess that shows what good airflow can do?

if it's 20 YEARS old, I mean, I dunno. I'm not one to be giving advice but if it were me I'd go buy a regular old Whirlpool standard dryer (those are my fav)
