Maytag help needed on A700

Hi guys,

As I've said in the past, I am better at accumulating washers than repairing. My recent Turquoise Maytags must get working soon. They're too pretty to sit and gather dust.

I cross-threaded an inlet hose. Can someone point me in the right direction for the valve body? I have a part #2-1163-1. It has three solenoids on it.

I also have a 142S that needs a lint filter. Does anyone have a spare that they'll part with?

I'm sure the washer needs more work than that, but I can't do much to it without a proper water valve.

Travis- try www.repairclinic.com and www.appliancepartsworldwide.com Search by both model # and part #- they have a lot of parts for Vintage Maytag. I have a white A700 that I acquired from Mike Arnold and I have found parts for it on both.

Ok,

I called Marcone Appliance and spoke to a human. I ordered a new valve. Can I replace the valve body on the part that I've damaged? It seems like I shouldn't just throw it away since I have two more Maytags that use these. I found the bulb for the tub light also!

Keep the older valve to cannibalize for parts. These older valves were designed to be serviced. You may actually be able to get individual parts for the valve if you look hard enough.

Ordered parts

Chris helped me figure out what I needed and I ordered belts, hoses, and all that stuff. I put my tub light in last night and it won't turn off. That has me confused. It only goes off if I unplug the machine.

I have the same problem with my Super Tag - a souped up A700. The switch was designed to do two things - if you just quickly pressed the red button, it would turn on the tub lamp. If you pushed and held it in it would turn both the tub and ignite the florescent bulb.

Over time, when you press the black button it doesn't quite get that first circuit cut-off. I've never cracked open the switch - but you might be able to mess with the black button enough to get it to shut off, or find a spare switch (which could prove difficult - of the 5 spares I have none of them were able to successfully shut off the tub bulb without massive effort.)

I didn't read my owners manual close enough to see that the pushbuttons control the tub light also. I have parts ordered, so I'm excited about getting this up and running soon!

Light switch...

If I hold the black button in, the tub light goes off. It won't stay off. I can't see how that switch is that special. I'll plug in my white washer and see what it does.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for an A700. The one glued to the rear is small, yellowed, and a pain in the rear to read. I'll get it going, then tackle my yellow set that's on the way!

Good sign that the switch is shot. I can have a wiring diagram posted tomorrow night - but if someone else has one available sooner - have at it!

Dead switch

You're right. The switch on my white Maytag works. I swapped it and my tub light works on the turquoise washer. The black button on the good switch will hold in the down position. The bad switch wouldn't. Now that I swapped the switches, the bad switch is working fine. Go figure.

More fun...

I got the new water valve installed, broke a hose clamp, and replaced that also. The washer runs pretty well. Chris will undoubtedly tell me it needs something, but until he comes over, I am using it.

I wired a receptacle for the dryer and it's running also. The lint filter was packed full of lint! I cleared that out and replaced the control light bulb.

My only questions are, where is the light for the dryer and how do I get there? Also, what bulb does it use?

What dryer model are you speaking of? I didn't see any reference to one in this post. I only found reference to your A-700 and 142S washers.

Which light are you trying to replace? Console, dial, or drum?

You'll want to take the back off the dryer and do some cleaning back there. While you have the back off, remove the fan housing and clean and oil the fan bearing/shaft. Also, clean and oil the idler shaft/bracket.

Use Turbine oil only!!!

I found the bulb. It helped to get a flashlight and stick my head in the drum. I cleaned all that out. Chris can help me clean out the back. I'm not big enough to really move the darn thing that much.

I had already replaced the dial lamp on this. This is the turquoise set I am working on. Once I figure it out, the white set and the yellow set will be so easy!
