Maytag JetClean QuietSeries 300 Dishwasher issue

We have a Maytag Quiet Series 300 Dishwasher than washes and runs well, but the handle/latch has stopped working for the second time. I've already replaced the handle once but it seems the real issue that the the holders for the handle have broken off the control panel back. A new handle and control panel will cost around $120. Is it worth putting the money into a six year old unit? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

It's a real Maytag dishwasher, yes it is!! "Real Maytag"=back when Maytag actually produced their own products before they were acquired by Whirlpool. [this post was last edited: 9/22/2011-19:06]

I've had the same dishwasher for almost three years now, and haven't any problems with it. The handles seems as tight as it was when it was new. And we use it every single day.

I'd fix it as they clean well and are built better than the Maytags of today.

I believe that the earlier models of that dishwasher had a latch problem that was "fixed" in a recall...not sure, but I think so. My aunt's had that issue, and I think she bought it in 2003. I have a newer (2008?) of the same machine and have not had any problems with the latch. The machine is a great performer, but I hate the length of the cycles....

You didn't give a model # but it sounds like you have a real MT built TT machine. And yes these had a lot of problems with handles and control panels breaking. We usually just replace the latch on these machines as you don't really need the handle to make the machine function properly. You can just pull the door open and it will still latch properly.

 

I would not put a lot of money in this machine as there are a lot of other potential problems awaiting you. The current WP designed and built MT DWs are much better and far more reliable than these other wise interesting machines. It was interesting that when WP took over MT they said that they would keep this DW design as it was made in an all-new very efficient factory. But after building it for about two years it was obvious that thier current TT machine was so much better that they closed the whole mess.

I own the 300 "quiet series" model and let me tell you Quiet is a misnomer.

Also Maytag dependability was forgotten as well.

Two control boards and the lower rack rusted through within 18 months. 

I have had the machine for four years now, and have to say, It is not your Mother's Maytag.

 

With that said the machine washes well, and nairy is a dish taken out that is not throughly cleaned.  In hindsight I would have pulled the Jet clean I left behind in my old house, and gave them the Frigidaire that I had when I bought this one.  The Quiet series replaced the Frigidaire within two months of the home purchase.  Whata piecea the Fridgidaire was.

 

Seeing what is on the market then and now, the main change I would have made with the Maytag is I would have purchaed the SS tub instead of the cheaper plastic model.

That dishwasher is VERY powerful.So powerful that Maytag had to put a pressure relief filter below the top rack to keep it from blowing the hook ups to the top wash arms.It does have a full 1/3 H.P. motor which is cool its to bad that they were not built better but the do clean good the one we had at the chalet did not have a problem but it was hard loading with 3 racks in it but was cool with 3 full size wash arms in it and one on top.

Model Number

Thanks to all for the information. Here's the model number of the dishwasher MDB7600AWS. What other types of problems are these dishwashers known to experience? We do frequently hear a rather loud, grinding type noise

That's simple the pump of this dishwasher is very simple device really.You need to take off the wash arm and screws holding down the strainer.You have something caught in the hard food grinder all water goes through the grinder (#8) and sizing screen is in the center of number 7 before the pump. Here is a schematic

Ours is a model MDB6701AWS, more downline than yours. But it performs very well. We don't rinse anything before putting it in the DW and everything always comes out clean. No smutz, dirt or anything on top of the glasses and plates. Plus it has Nylon racks, so we don't have to worry about rusting.

We DO use the Hi Wash Temp and Auto Clean and Sani-Rinse cycles however. Mainly because there are dog bowls in the DW with our stuff. We've had Maytag dishwashers in previous houses and they always seemed to clean better and last longer than other brands we've had. But we never have has a KitchenAid before, either.

I was a little worried about the electronic controls so we did take out an 4 year extended warranty on the unit.

The 'new and improved' latch has metal pivots on the handle and lasts better than the old, generally... I don't sweat the broken 'keeper' tabs on the console as they are small and not very resilient. The latch assy's I replace last just as well without replacing the console. Make sure you've checked the Maytag website as many of the plastic tall tubs of that era are under a recall for the heating element. If it is, it's a quick and FREE repair. The grinding is most likely some crap caught in the sump that's hitting off if the chopper blade. I find all sorts of things like pistachio shells, bread bag closers, broken glass, etc...
