hi. new here. my old dishwasher suddenly and all at once is gushing water like a waterfall from the top right corner of the door. the black plastic above the tub is pretty badly cracked. a repairman yesterday said my door gasket was shot-too hard. i would think that would lead to a gradual leak, but i know nothing. i cleaned the float which had so much gunk i thought i was removing a sponge filter. thought that may have stuck allowing too much water. cleaned the filter as well which wasn't bad. any thoughts before i pick up a replacement potscrubber 640?

You may be able to get a replacement door gasket if necessary, sometimes you can lucky and find parts for these older machines or make something else work. I would assume this is a porcelain tank reverse rack...if so you can also adjust the door latch so it closes tighter

i don't know how to tell if it's porcelain. also don't know what reverse rack is. found a door seal on e bay for $55. if the door seal is hard like the repairman said would it start gushing from the top like a waterfall all at once instead of gradually?

A reverse rack Maytag is glass, cups, and simillar go in the bottom rack an plates and similar go in the top rack along with the flatware basket.

Or look at these photos

yes, that's the one i have except a 284. that is also the door gasket i found on ebay but not certain mine is bad. perhaps if i post some pics. i did drive to orlando and picked up a like new potscrubber 640 for $40. i just hate to trash or part out the maytag without knowing what caused the sudden "waterfall" problem. it worked fine until i installed a new under sink water filter a few days ago. the filter runs to my fridge, not the faucet. could that have anything to do with it?

Not sure you'll happy with the 640. There's no filter and their cleaning ability is subpar at best. These were the builders grade dishwashers back then.

someone posted this here ten years ago:

"The exception was the 640 model, which you did not find in the GE appliance catalogue. This was a specialty model for select stores, that did offer a few extra features such as the passive filtration system."
