How do I disable the lid switch on one of these? I want to be able to watch it but I want the protection from the out of balance thingy too.

Joe, I hope someone proves me wrong, but I don't think that is feasable. It either functions as designed or allows you to watch with the lid open and no out of balance stopping protection.
As far as I know it's not possible to do this with a post-1967 Maytag (that's the year they changed the out-of-balance switch from a mechanical lever that shut the timer off to an electrical one as part of the lid switch. Most people that I know who choose to override these switches do so with a toggle switch mounted on the back or side of the control panel. This switch overrides the lid switch when you're there and when you're done with the "excitement" of watching, you flip the switch back to "normal" and close the lid. I've never done one of these overrides but armed with the schematic and basic electrical knowledge I think anyone could figure it out.[this post was last edited: 6/6/2012-22:22]
I tied the end of the lid switch back on my Maytag LA511 many years ago and the off balance switch was defeated. If I am in the next room and it goes out of balance, the lid will hit the control knob, pushes it in and it stops.
Lebron, I do have pics, I have 2 machines. One is a LAT9605 and the other I cannot remember other than LAT. I can post some pics later today for you. Anything particular you want to see?

I used a small pry bar on my Maytag. It was easy to insert and remove.

With the lid closed slip the card between the lid to depress the lid switch. Open the lid with said card still in place. Watch the show and when finished pull out the card. Nothing defeated, nothing overridden.

I use a half of a wooden clothes pin... Fits perfectly back there and won't pop the lid out of the ball hinges...
