I went to my local dump yesterday and found what looked like an older Maytag on its last leg.I brought it home and, today,I hooked it up.The fron panel clips were gone and the original or previous owner had taped it on.I removed the bolts and looked inside. The base plate was rusted but,no grease on the walls.I turned it on and the drain hose had cracks in it and it popped off the pump causing a small flood. After that and splicing/reconnecting the drain hose,I turned it back on.I forgot to mention that I also replaced the belts prior to hook up.It does fabulous!!No noise other than the strain during the spin.Once the rpms reached their climax, the noise went from a growel to a purr.It is model# A408---serial#421370YQ.The delicate and p/press buttons, when pressed do not work.It is only agitating and spinning on regular.everything else works great.Any clue on why the delicate speed for pp and del.doesn't work????Any and all help is greatly appreciated. This model will be my first collectable found on the "Big Island"!!Aloha and Mahalo!!

Sounds like that part of the motor is shot. Possibly need a new 2 speed motor.

five extra large,3 medium and 1 small load later,

It runs like a champ. No more leaks and I have an extra base off another unit that was similar to a dead squirel after a few days out on the highway. However, the vultures had taken what they needed or wanted and left a carcuss with nothing but the base and frame off an A606 in white.Anyway,I switched them and had to also get the clamps off a Kenmore dryer that was there yesterday. They worked.I just could not believe the rat nest that was in the control panel.I need to check the unit with the wires for the lid switch connected so the lid could be completely open during its test drive.I know there is another way using cardboard in the back of the lid.I just prefer to use the wire method. I usualy wind up splicing them anyway.

All the loads came out great and the spray rinse lasts forever! That may thoroughly rinse the close before there deeper rinse with softner but,to me,that's just a waste. Being that as it may,the clothes were dried in a gas dryer and I was quite impressed to say the least.I will now repaint the body and try to find out if the switch is bad ,a wire is loose or the motor is faulty. I don't think (and I could be wrong)that the motor is the issue. It really is a strong agitation and spin. The pump out really works well too.Lots of fun to watch.

A-408

you have a 1 speed machine, I have the exact same one. On the pp cycle it spins out the wash water stops and fills with cold water and then spins again b/4 the rinse cycle on delicate it is agitation and soak. It is what Maytag called their Fabricmatic macine. Love mine. Mike

The were built to last back then, not not like today where built to last means five or 6 years. I'm glad you were able to save it.

Congrats! I'll never forget draggin' our "Maude" (A407 got for $20!) home, tipping her back and making sure the belts were good, and then watchin' her do her glorious Maytag thing without so much as a whimper!

Hey Mike,

Nowhere do the words "Fabric-Matic apear on this model. When I press delicate, the motor does not come on.When I press Permanant Press,it agitates and will spin fast for 1 minute, then stop.No water comes in,no no action at all.

I did a huge load from the "Theater Room" where there's a 9 ft by 12 ft movie screen and a projection T.V with satalite and surround sound.Lots to eat and drink as well as plenty of 420.
Anyway,I washed 8 bath towels and a set of queen size sheets with two pillow cases to boot.It did a great job and made little noise doing it.I used Gain with Bleach liquid laundry detergent and Gain fabric softner. I only use 1/4 capful of the softner. Just enough to keep the static down in the dryer and make the sheets smell nice for the next guest.I sourt of feel like I am in Zen!! LOL
