I may be picking up a used Neptune today. Is there any harm in transporting it on its side?

If I were you, I wouldn't do that
I SUGGEST YOU NOT TO DO THAT,
move it while it stands upright, never move a front-loader on it sides, cause the water may run into the cabinet and make some problems for electronic boards. and of course water can go through the detergent dispenser and makes it such a messy transportation!
other wise if you strongly insist on side moving and if it's a front-load Neptune try to secure the outer tub by attaching the safe-transportation screws which came by washer first time(I'm not sure that the Maytag has it or not, but Miele and my mom's Electrolux has)
try to fully close the dispenser opening, use a cloth, plastic bag or anything to seal the opening from leakage,
and if it has any other opening (especially on the back side)which came from the tub, seal it ,use the same way. that was all
but that was just my idea, experience any thing

It can also be safely transported on it's back, thus reducing the chances of damaging the cabinet sides.
I use a minivan and lay the machine on old comforters or moving blankets, this makes it easy to simply slide in or out, usually by myself.
Also, remember to tape the door shut and remove the supply hoses.

The older Newton born Neppies do not have the securing bolts. They were originally shipped with yellow straps around the tub and attached to the pallet. You were supposed to cut one end and pull it completely out. Many just cut both ends and when I open them up for service, there are the straps dangling around.
The newer Samsung 'Neptunes' did have bolts thru the back for shipment but it is highly not recommended by Maytag to try putting them back as many people try and end up cracking the tub by not lining the bolts up before hammering them home.
On the back is fine. I've seen them on the side and water normally should not leak out of the tub as the vents are up top... Sitting upright is always preferred...
