Today,a customer dropped off a Maytag top of the line(from Home Depot)washer.I turned it on its side and looked underneath to find the Threading??on its pump pully had dissengaged and caused it to freeze.The pully on the main motor had melted plastic on it and what looks to be part of the motor housing made of rubber came completely disconected from the motor and looks as thow it was glued on at the factory. Now,the motor is not centered and will not stabelize.I know that the pump needs replacement as well as the motor pully and the drive belt but,I have never worked on nor even seen the inner works of these newer Norge machines.I am sure their cheap engineereing and craftsmanship helped devise their fall into Whirlpool's lap.When selling them,I would turn it over to show the similarities it has with the Admiral and close a sale saving the customers hundreds of dollars.The Admiral retailed for $299 and the Maytag that had the same features retailed for $599.Anyone who has any info in helping me to basicly rebuild this unit?It is nice and claims to be a three agitation speed unit with a few neet features like a minute or two of running cold water to rinse anything off your "delicate hands".

The 'older' pumps have a bad habit of throwing that bearing and making scraping noises and locking up. The new pumps are improved and should not do that but there are two different styles of pump. The belt is simple enough to do. If it needs a motor pulley, you could be screwed a little as you USED to be able to get just the plastic motor pulley for around $10. Whirlpool now has it so you can get that SAME pulley for $10 but it comes with a $120 motor attached to it. Why you can only get the pulley as part of a motor/pulley set is beyond me... Hit me with a model and serial number and I'll look up the part numbers. I MIGHT even have a spare motor pulley around here somewhere. To get into the unit, you use a putty knife and push in two spring clips that hold the top down to the cabinette like a MAV washer. The motor is supposed to pivot back and forth a little on the motor plate.

The cabinet is in great shape and the inner tub is too but,from fabric softner and other innert ingredients in detergents and additives build up is max in the upper part of the outer tub. nothing some muratic acid can't clean out.The current motor is working great except for the pully being ruined from friction and the belt freyed.It is fixable and I am going to give it a new look. I will refinish it in turquoise since I am more than likely going to keep it and,like the current model I have (A408) that is being used by myself and other employees who live here,I will disconect the A408 and retire it. Then,once it's back together and working,I'll connect the newer model and we can do bigger loads.I still have a friend who is a Maytag rep in florida who may be able to get the see thru demo lid or that Maytag.

I always liked Norge too and am looking forward to finishing the repair on this one.I am not that fond of the plastic tubs and the trans,even though it's realitively a new washer,looks cheap compared to the older Norge models that had that loud tub brake.Their agitation,spin speed and length of wash and rinse agitation times is remarable and I never had to rewash anything.Just like with the true Maytags,they really wash and rinse clothes well.

I thought the newer Maytag machines were Whirlpool designs. And I also thought that Norge machines haven't been made in years.

So how new is this machine? Is it from the 80's? And how is it connected to Norge? I'm confused here.

This unit was in production until about four years ago.I worked for HD until '07 and we still had them available,in stock.They also had the Admirals made in the old Norge plant until just a year ago.

I took the freyed metal strip out that was causing the pump to freeze and it freed the unit allowing it to turn easily.I placed it back and now need to purchase(or find one free at the dump)a belt.I tried the original but it was stretched from the faulty frozen pump.The local hardware store had one but there's was too wide and flew right off.So,I have to take a trip to either the town of Kona(135 miles) or Hilo(45 mles)to get a real,true Maytag/Norge drive belt.

The shop in Kona is owned and run by a verry intelectual,friendly couple who've been servicing and supplying parts to customer's appliances 45 years.The place in Hilo is a used appliance store that attempted to sell me used "dogs" for a KitchenAid 3 speed washer for $45 as well as a used Maytag agitator for $100!!!!!!!!!!!!The Sears parts store,across the street from them had the dogs(brand new)for only $11 and a new Maytag agitator for only $40.The guys at the used appliance store were rednecks.They took one look at my tattoo and wouldn't stop asking me stupid questions about it.I finaly left and went to Sears parts store.

News you might use...

The pump part# is 21001873 which subs to a 35-6780
The belt part# is 21352320
The pulley part# is 22004297. Try looking for the pulley online or at a dealer's old stock otherwise you'll have to buy the whole stupid motor assy just for the pulley. That part# is 21001950. If you can't find the pulley, drop me a line and I might have the old pulley kicking around here, somewhere.

This Herrin platform washer was widely used across the Maytag company lines. They had their trade offs. Bigger capacity than the Dependable Cares but contained much more plastic. They sold so well because they fit into so many people's budgets. Decent capacity, decent wash action at a low price point. The weak points I've seen with this platform include: the pump (revised for the better), the plastic lid hinges tend to break, shake (usually due to soap, lint, ect getting into the self leveling rear leg mech. Easily corrected), the trans drive pulley setup which had somewhere around 8-9 moving parts that would melt/sieze and cause a no spin (this has also been revised to a design that uses 2-3 parts - MUCH BETTER) and sometimes the trans can strip out internal gearing. Am I saying that the line is junk? No. I'm saying that I've worked on so many because it was a VERY popular seller under many names. Huge numbers were sold over the years. I actually think it does pretty well for what it is. Certainly better than the Maytag era Amana design (SAV's). Anyway, Here are most of the prefixes that I'm aware of...

Herrin line prefixes:
PAV - Maytag Performa
MAV - Maytag Atlantis
CAV - Magic Chef
AAV - Admiral
HAV - Maytag branded (usually sold at H.D., Lowes, Sears...)
LNC - Montgomery Wards 'Signature' line

Temporary pump fix...

Sorry, you and I posted at the same time. You WILL need to eventually replace that pump as it will crap out with out that strip you took out. Again, check EBAY for the parts and hopefully free shipping. If you're gonna fix her, you might as well do it right... :^)

In the hunting field where we go and shoot the wild pigs(boars)that are a continual problem here but great for eats,folks also dump old recks and old appliances. There is currently a Maytag there that has the sort of tilted or angled lid. The pump on it is intact as well as the trans and tubs. The control panel,agitator,motor,drive belt and front panel are gone.I will go there again tomorrow to remove its pump and transfer it to the other unit.I turned it and it orked fine.Thanks for the great info and I'll keep you posted.
