Maytag Over-ride

Question, I have 2 Maytags in service and I want to omit the warm rinse from them. Is there a simple way to do this? The main reason is that our water heater is so inadequate that a HOT/WARM on the A407 really knocks it out, and the A502S does a warm rinse on WARM and HOT. So I was just curious about it, I personally don't have a real need for warm rinse unless a situation needs it, since there are 2 other people in the house using the machines, I'd like to change it to cold on them.

 

Any suggestions?

Very Simple, after the machine fills for wash,change the water temp switch to cold for the rinse temp. If you don't have that option, turn off the hot water faucet after the machine fills for wash, and the rinse will be cold.

I think Tim is wanting a correction or alteration that doesn't require user input, at least for the two other house-mates, is that right Tim? I can see any of us here on AW having no problem changing the temp selections to get a cold rinse, OR manipulating the faucets, but I don't see "non-washer people" caring enough to do this.

The only way I can think of to change the machine would be to modify the temp switches. If there are comparable later 1970s switches which would fit which have only cold-rinse settings, that may be a way to go. OR, how about just leaving the hot water nearly off all the time (except when you want to use the machines Tim?) that way there will be luke-warm washes and rinses...might be the simplest thing without making any changes to the machines. Detergents are supposedly formulated for cooler washes now anyway so you'll just be mimicking the dumbed-down wash temps found in late model top loaders already.

Any other ideas?

Complete Disable

I can manually set the machine to another wash setting, but I was basically looking to hardwire the machine or add a switch to set the rinse temp to cold. It's not just me using the machine and one roomie uses hot for everything. Realistically people don't think about it, the washer is usually loaded and returned to a couple of hours later, noone is unfortunately going to wait for the machine to fill and then change the temp. This is sort or trivial, but it's something I want to try an do...

You could wire in a switch to function like the "Automatic" rinse switch on an A700 or A702.

This is a horrible example of the wiring diagram, but it could be done fairly easily by placing a SPST switch between the rinse leg of the timer and the push button temp switch.

Don't worry about the three temp wires coming out of the push button switch in the wiring diagram example, you'll run your new cold wire from the new toggle to the cold side of the push button, and "automatic" wire to the original rinse input of the push button switch.

Drill a hole on the back side of the panel and you're set. Your roommates won't even know it is there!

When I encountered this with a BITC*, I meant roomie, who washed one outfit at a time, full level and hot washes.....

I used 2 "Y" connectors with valves, and with extra hoses as cross-overs, for her clothes, I turned off the hot water all together, this allowed only cold water to each valve no matter what was selected.....she only loaded, closed the lid, and started the machine and ran...never knew the difference......you have to install backflow preventers as well at the faucets....

PITA when you have to deal with inconsiderate people like this.......another reason why I have Neptunes for the tenant only.....2 top loaders was killing my tank too with all hot full load washes for a few items....

what I find amazing too is when they have to pay the bill, its ALL cold washes, but when they don't have to...they run it like no tommorow, and you have to take extra measures yourself....

When she's buying we always have to order the cheapest thing on the menu, no drinks or wine, but when I buy it's Chateaubriand or Beef Wellington, and appetizers and double desserts, and wine and drinks. LOL
