Maytag Porta-Washer In Iowa

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I have one of Greg Nunn's porta washers that I picked up for him in St. Paul. Very fun machine and great water action. I might try and get this one as sooner or later I will have to give Greg his washer!

Illinois Porta-Washer

Wow, very nice indeed!! And check out the back panel...no corrosion!! Looks like a "light use" machine.

With the repair manual that Greg sent me and a s***load of spare parts from my previous "not-so-nice" machine, I'm giving this one some serious thought! They do ship...

Hmmmm,

Wondering though how difficult is it to find parts for Maytag "Porta Washers". The second unit looks vvvvvvvvvvvery interesting, but after my experience with a MIB Hoover TT arriving with problems, now know just because an appliance looks and or was used lightly does not mean it does not have problems.

At least Hoover parts are somewhat easy to come by, if only from parts of the former British Empire! *LOL* Haven't seen spare parts at all for Maytag TTs.

Maytag twin tub parts

Are on Sears' website. Type in model A50. Many parts are NLA but I did see that at least one of the belts is still available. I believe Austin has one and ordered parts for it.

Boy, all this talk about the port-a-washer; I'm going to have to get mine out this weekend and give it a workout!! I haven't used it for a few months.

I'll try to post pics.

I had one in the late 1970's that I bought brand new when I had my first apartment. It was my very first credit purchase! Loved it; I remember major oversudsing because Tide and Oxydol were still the 1 cup formula. I washed everything in site that first day!!! :-)

Got it!

WOOHOO!! I'm glad I won this one as it is in much better shape than my previous A-50, plus I have the repair manuals! It still has the shipping ring over the spinner as Greg mentioned, and I see the rubber clothes guard lurking in there as well! Judging by the looks of it, it can't be anything less than low-mileage! Looking forward to washing twinnie style again! Will keep everyone posted.

Well Done!

What a nice belated birthday present, Austin.

Was considering taking a stab at this unit, but have my hands full with my Hoover TT at the moment. Sides as you have lots of spare parts already for Maytag TTs, it seems only right you should have this item. Sides you really have had a string of bad luck with trying to find a unit in decent condition for long term use, and they do say "three times is the charm".

Of course you will be posting pictures of your new baby upon arrival, yes?

Thanks! I'll definitely post pictures when it arrives! Hope everything's going well with the Hoover; has the new pump arrived yet?

I saw where you placed a couple bids, and since "Don4u" was still the high bidder I had to save it. His maximum was just a little bit outrageous considering the age of the item he was bidding on...at $41, it seems like he (who was in Illinois and had a lot of automotive items in his feedback) was intent on getting his rag washer...LOL!

Or it could have been another case of shill-bidding...OY! Either way, I'm glad it's another welcome addition to the club!

Really didn't want the item, and my heart was not in the bidding.

Your Maytag was about what I paid for my Hoover TT,so that seems about right for "newish" twin tubs.

My soft spot is more for Hoover TTs as they are/were designed for spin rinsing, and have a higher spin rpm speed. Don't get me wrong, both machines have their virtues. But having experienced the work involved with twin tub washing, would rather speed things along by using spin rinses, with maybe one tub of water used for final rinsing of everything washed that day. Hoover's really fling soap/detergent/water and soil out of the fabric and right down the drain. Even items spun on 1200 in my front loader, give up more water with a brief spin in the Hoover. How cool is that?

No, my "care package" from down under hasn't arrived yet, but maybe the postman did come today and we were not home. Hopefully it will arrive by this weekend and I will have some free time and would be perfect to work on the twinnie.

Glad you "took one for the team" and best of luck with your new toy. Am truly hoping you can finally put together the washer of your dreams. Goodness knows between this washer and all the extra parts, you should be able to! *LOL*

Shill Bidding

Doubt it. If the seller truly knew what he had, would have skipped the "farm" bit and called the washer "Vintage Maytag PortaWasher. RARE *LOOK*) or some such nonesense. Prolly would have added a hefty reserve as well. Lord knows everyone else selling "vintage" items seems to be doing that these days.
