Maytag question

I have found an older Maytag that my friends parents had. I am pretty sure it broke down in some fashion, and not just replaced, but I am not sure to what extent the breakdown was. My question is, how would I be able to tell if it is the Helical or Orbital transmission without having to look at the machines insides? It is the one with the brown console, and knob on the right...but I am not sure which era of the 80's it is from. Any advice? Thanks in advance.....

Long fins and larger skirt on the agitator would be the slower-stroke transmission. Short fins and small skirt and more pronounced fins on the sides of the agitator would be an orbital (shorter, faster stroke) transmission.

and generally a white agitator is in the Orbital tranny machines. I guess it is too old to have the load sensor agitator with the auger on top, but that would be white also.

Thanks guys. The machine is too old to be the auger-type of agitator. I stay away from those things, period! I will have to check it out, I think the agitator was white. I used it just one time....and it was a few years back. I know that I want a Maytag with the helical drive, and NOT the short-fast one. It is sooo hard to find older Maytags in my neck of the woods!! I would LOVE to get my hands on an 806 washer.... Oy, from my mouth to Gods ears.
