Maytag Questions

I have replaced the outer tub clamp how tight do you tighten the bots on the clamp? I've also replaced the belts, but now when the washer spins it squeals, at the beginning of the spin cycle. Is this normal because of the new belts?

Others seem to disagree with me on this, but I say the squeal at the beginning of the spin is totally normal! As a kid this is one of the things I remember.

Although I have no idea of what would cause it, or any of how to fix it, I do know it should not squeal. It is common on Maytags that have aged, but the spin should start off without any other noises than those made by the motor, and the sucking sound the pump makes as it first engages.

I grab the biggest screw driver I have and crank them down as tight as I can. I don't think it's humanly possible to damage the tub cover or outer tub.

Did you purchase genuine Maytag belts? The ones you posted in another thread were NOT genuine Maytag belts. Did you clean both motor pulley grooves? Also, I have yet to get Maytag that didn't need a spring/glide replacement and lube (Part# 205000) along with a good cleaning of the sliding carriage.

A rare possibility, but no so uncommon if genuine Maytag belts are NOT used, is improper pump pulley tension. Should be 1/4 inch between the pump belt if gently squeezed in the middle.

The belts that I bought are genuine Maytag which I bought from the Maytag dealer. I didn't clean the pulleys. I friend is coming over this weekend to help me clean the pulleys, clean and lube the sliding carriage. The squealing stops when most or all the water is drained from the tub.

I was afraid of over tightening the tub clamp, but I did what you did and that is one tight clamp.

What do you clean the pulleys with?

A a clean cotton rag soaked in rubbing alcohol. Make sure to get deep into the pulley grooves.

Squealing pump

I use to work in a laundry with maytag top loaders, the chemicals we used use to damage the pumps and they would start to squeal during first start of spin...once we replaced them the noise would stop....with so many machines running was hard to tell which one was making the noise...once replaced all was quiet....could solve your problem maybe...funny though they only squealed during spin never during wash action...go figure

If I push the motor a little towards the back of the machine during the spin, it stops. It's getting a lube job this weekend.
