The one thing my TL MT hasn't done to piss me off is smell. I always leave the lid up and make sure all is dry. Sooo, I thought that I would go ahead and use the AFFRESH that came with the unit. Dropped the tab in selected 'clean washer' cycle. Then I stood in disbelief as the stupid thing went through a whole 'sensing routine' for what, a frggin tablet?!

Henene, sadly I believe you are correct, since it fills the tub up on both wash and rinse. I'll have to try it with clothes. The AFFRESH tabs must be pretty well compacted, the impeller played soccer with it for quite a while.

What makes the tub clean cycle different to wash cycles? I've never encountered a machine with such a thing... is it the one and only way to get a decent amount of heat?

The “clean tub” cycle on my TL washer only allows for cold water when using that specific cycle. The manual also recommends adding 200ml oxygenated bleach

The MT has no way to heat water. I am washing a load of mixed whites on HEAVY, HOT, FAB SOFT AND EXTRA RINSE. The hope being that it would fill more completely since I'm fighting kidney infections in the house. It did indeed fill to max level with it's version of hot sadly it still didn't get simple stains out of PP clothes. I will accept my poor purchase choice and save my pennys for something else.

I don’t know which model Maytag TL you have, but I have an MCVW415EW, and from what I’m reading in your posts, yours sounds similar to mine.

Mine has never smelled, but I do use the Afresh cycle once a month too, but I don’t think it’s really necessary if you use mostly hot water and LCB with whites. The main reason I do the monthly clean cycle is that I read on the Maytag website that this cycle used regularlly, as recommended somehow keeps the software refreshed so everything continues to function as it should as far as spin speed, balancing, water temps, fill levels, ect., so I just do it as insurance that the washer keeps functioning flawlessly like it has for 14 mo. now.

For whites I use the Powerwash cycle, hot, max soil level, pre soak option selected, no extra rinse, 2/3 cup LCB, Persil Intense Fresh and no FS. My whites really come out cleaner than any washer I’ve ever owned before and this cycle, even with the presoak option completes in 60 mins.

I’ve really been pleased with this Maytag TL. I can get a fill to the top on Bulky, but I mostly use either the Power Wash or Deep Water cycles. These cycles use about the same amount of water that an old school FL, like a Westinghouse would have used, so there is enough water to thoroughly wash and rinse and load.

From what I’ve read online the PowerWash and Deep Water cycles on these machines use the hottest water, which is supposed to be 120F, which is hot enough to satisfy my needs. I wash just about every load on Hot, Max Soil level, and every load comes out great. And there is never any lint left on the clothes and the dryer lint filter never has much lint either. In fact, once my husband left a Kleenex in a pocket that I missed when sorting. but even that load wasn't covered in lint. I really think that people need to give these machines a chance, my experience with them has been very positive.

I hope that you will eventually grow to like yours too.

interesting.....mine is a 2010....it has a Clean Washer cycle, but built before the Deep water or Power wash options were available....

I was told that the sprinkler was more for rinsing down the interior more than treating the clothes...

I find it amazing, you can't get some of these machines to add more water, but run a Clean Washer cycle, and it fills the tub up almost full.....most times with HOT water.....and I would be saving energy through all of this how?

I have yet to run a clean cycle since I have owned it....this machine, like all my Neptunes, which never had a clean washer cycle in the first place, stays clean on its own.....

clean washer cycle, clean washer products, leave doors/drawers open, wipe down interior.....yada, yada, yada....put that up there with "Thing's you wont find me doing for 100 dollars, Alex!"

seems redundant.....as my dishwasher, that cleans itself while it is cleaning my dishes...

and my Continuous Cleaning Oven that cleans while it bakes....

as for all my appliances....a spritz with Windex, and an occasional coat of wax, is all the maintenance they need....

although, Ebony/Black appliances seem to attract more dust, and make it stick out like a sore thumb.....but I wouldn't give them up for anything....
