In short we have a maytag washer, about 6 or 7 years old. Last night it was washing then I smelled burning rubber. It would not agitate. When the cycle hit spin, much to my amazement it spun. When I took the towels out, the tub rocked back and forth. Not sure what the issue is and I'm concerned it's really broken. Any ideas?

after 100 views, I am sure everyone is thinking the same thing...Nothing that a good scrub down wouldn't fix first.......you actually pull clean clothes out of that machine?.....

since it spins but does not agitate, I would pull the belt and try turning the trans pulley by hand, chances are its locked up....rare but can happen....unusual for a newer machine, these have the orbital tranny, very heavy duty....but this is where I would start...

Thanks

I will try that. It was given to us about a month ago when our 7 year old LG front loader broke. Therefore, most of what I know about this one is guesswork. We'll see if I can fix it, otherwise I will look into Speed Queen's.

hard to tell by the pics, but just make sure these are Maytag, or at least clutch slip style belts, and not a regular auto type regular belt, that alone would cause the burning rubber smell if not the right type......

these belts by design are supposed to slip, the motor is under spring tension, which will tighten as it picks up speed......

what did you mean by the tub rocking?....the whole inner/outter tub unit, or just the inner tub?......while you have the front off, there should be 3 springs that keep the unit centered.......your machine is too new for these things to be worn out or weak at this point...

what you should do is take the belts off and turn the pulley, just to check for lock up or a drag in the tranny.....mainly during wash phase as that was whee the burning smell started.....one direction spins the whole tranny with the tub, the other direction locks the tranny and only the agitator will oscilate....

run a small load with the front off just to see if you can pin point where this burning is comming from....just keep clear of that spinning tranny...use caution
