Visited a rleative last night to find that the 12 y.o. TOL Maytag W & D set that I had bought them as a wedding present was unceremoniously ousted and kicked to the curb. IIRC it was about $1,300 for the set at the time.

In their place was a Frigidaire Gallery front-loader on a pedestal and a rather ordinary GE gas dryer with a painted drum. *FEH*

But perhaps more intereresting: The washer was said to have an electrical fault like an internal fuse that kept blowing. (HUH?, What fuse?).

The dryer needed a new blower wheel early in its career, and now more recenlty had a "major" breakdown. No details as to what.

The repairman said to the realtive that the machines are NOT commercial duty....he was there to fix the Frigidaire washer... and that they were not designed for the kind of use they were getting (it's an ordinsry family of 5). Can you imagine?

I was sad to see the Maytags get booted out.
 
My babies were thrown under the bus.

It had an automatic double-wash and double-rinse. There were two dispenser cups for the agititator; one for softener one for detergent (exaclty the same, they were, except for color).

It combined a regular cycle with a fabric-matic gentle cyle AND a two-speed motor giving it, effectively, 4 wash speeds.
 
That maytag prolly had a fuse in line with a "check switch". The check switch "checks" to make sure the lid switch functions properly. If not, it creates a "short" that trips the inline fuse wired to the inlet valve, thus disabling the machine's fill. Usually an easy fix. You cannot just buy the fuse separetely.

Sounds like I could have eliminated the "Check switch" and had a running machine!

Didn't think to "pry" earlier-- I never expected such a machine to get evicted.
 
What an opportunity!

Take them back, and then sell them on Craigslist with copy that reads:

4 yr. old Maytag Whaser and Drier set $365. Both run real good, ingrate relatives wanted front loaders. Whaser doesn't agtitate. no pictures.

Thanks John. I'll need to see a wiring diagram schematic to see whay what/where/why this check-switch is all about.

I'm really sick to my stomach that the machine was curbed with no chance on my part to fix it or hoard it.
 
Sounds like the washer was an LAT9806AAE. Definately TOL , in fact the only model I can remember with the "double wash" option. It came with a grey liquid detergent cup that went in place of the regular white softener cup. You could use one or the other- not both. This was available in the fall of 1996 but was considered the Dependable Care 97 line. The start of the more slanted/rounded control panel and the new LoadSensor (auger type) agitator. I never sold too many of them. They were pretty expensive. I think about $699.00. What a generous gift BTW. They certainly could have though of or consulted you before dumping it. It probably needed a new lid switch kit but they were just trying to change the fuse. When it kept blowing they decided it was a "major" short so they tossed it.

I never outright SAID it, (but I never denied it either!) but the four I had in my basement MIGHT have been a clue...........

And besides any time an older relative is in the mix they love to tell stories of me running to the laundromat as a very young rug-rat...........

I am usually consulted before new appliances are chosen.........

lid switch

Incorporated with the lid switch there IS a fuse.However,the part to replace it is another lid switch that,as I began to say ,is incorporated with the part.So,instead of just replacing the fuse alone,you need to replace that entire switch.When I worked at Direct Maytag in Altamonte Springs,Florida, I replaced a lot of them on machines customers were replacing with Neptunes.What a nightmare that became!!!

...Toggleswitch2 I totally understand. I have relatives the same way, and it gets old after a while!! Although my Aunt and uncle did let me know when they were going to replace their Kenmore Electronic Fabric care set, thus they are now in my possession. However, they are the only ones who have did this, and i'm so glad they did.
 
check switch can be bypassed

the check switch was to moniter the main (black) lid switch but the cheap {white) check switch always fails frist. You can eliemte the fuse checksw and just leave the black switch.I have done this on hunders of machens it does not change the operation or saftey of the machine in any way.
