I have a Maytag top loader washer model LAT9706AAE. Unit will complete the spin cycle with an empty tub, but even with a mini "water" only load unit stops spinning after 5 or so seconds. I have to let it sit for 5-10 minutes and try running the spin cycle again. I eventually had to empty the tub manually to get the spin cycle to start up.

Any thoughts?

Pump?

I suppose I would look at the Pump Belt and/or Pulley to be sure there is no binding going on. Has the machine been serviced recently?

It sounds like you need to replace the springs and slides on the motor carriage that provides the "clutching" action for the motor. If it's not sliding on it's base, the motor will not be able to continue running with a full tub of water and clothes and it's overload protector will cut it out.

Rebuilding the motor carriage with new grease, slides and springs and a new set of belts will probably get this washer working like new again.

At first the machine started making a loud squealing noise and smoking, so I replaced the burnt out drive belt but I could not manually turn the drum. I replaced the transmission and tub bearing. The motor seems to move freely on the base, but the is hot to the touch after it goes into the spin cycle.
