Maytag stack LSG7804 gas dryer

I was swapping out the water fill valve on Mother's washer today and she said that sometimes, not all the time, she thinks she can smell gas.  I also could smell just a very faint whiff of captan while working on the washer.  Not enough to burn, not enough to explode.  Kind of like you smell when you walk past your gas meter and the odor comes from the vent.  The stack has not been moved since it was installed 26 years ago.  Nothing has been disconnected (until the water hoses today).  I didn't have time to do any soapy water test, will do that next time.  Would the coils cause this or is the valve itself beginning to have problems?  If it were a connection it would smell ALL the time, not just sometimes.  The dryer works perfectly and she hopes the stack will last her the rest of her life.

most likely time for a new valve....

you can always contact the gas company to run a check, their little machines can detect the smallest leak....its a free service....just tell them your catching a whiff of gas...

if your adventurous you can also check with a lighter placed near the gas burner tip, in darkness you may see a quick puff of a flame showing the small leak...

Slight Gas Leak From A Dryer

I would check all connections behind and around the machine with soapy water solution.

 

We find gas leaking through the double gas valves very rare but we do see it once in a while, if it is leaking through the valve you generally will smell gas inside the dryer when you first open the door after the dryer has been sitting unused overnight etc.

 

I would be careful about calling the gas company, in our area they just condemn the appliance and red tag it and shut off the gas, 90% of the time they tell you the regulator is leaking and they almost NEVER pinpoint the exact source of the leak.

Thanks guys.  I'm thinking valve unfortunately and they are NLA from WP/MT.  The odor is so slight, not even as much as I used to smell from my old Caloric range when a pilot light had gone out.  But it's still concerning.  Next time I visit we will do the soap test and I may do the flame test, I'm not scared.  That's the only real disadvantage to having a permanently stacked unit...if one goes completely out the whole thing has to be replaced.  I showed her the new SQ  and LG stacks.  All the other top loader stacked sets have poor ratings now.  Her washer looks like it did the day it was made...inside is so clean, no rust, no oil leaks or evidence of water leaks from the trans and tub seals.  I put new MT belts on it while I was under there working just because it's 26 years old. 

Do the new WP stacks still have the DD transmission?   Her laundry closet was set up for SxS w/d and we could go back to that with pedestals but she likes the stacked setup because she has much more room in there.  We could also get a FL set and stack them but she's not very tall and the dryer controls would be difficult to see for her without a step stool and I don't want her having to climb up on one every time she has to dry clothes.

it beens a while, but if I am correct, the gas assembly is the same as just about any other machine, and the snorkel is a U-turn style to fit the space, but you can just swap that out....

all you need is the valve....JohnL will hopefully chime in to make sure which one will fit, but for the most part, their universal....

in fact I am using coils designed for a Frigidaire in my Neptunes, RedCarpetDrew claims their better and more durable....and so far, they have been...

I don’t think Whirlpool makes the 24” direct drive stacked units anymore, and now their new 24” stacked units essentially have one of those newer RCA portable washers instead of the direct drive washers. Dumb move on Whirlpool’s part to discontinue the direct drives in the stacked units since they were THE last good stacked units you could buy and now they are all disposable junk.

slight Gas Leak From A Dryer

We have good used valves for this MT dryer if needed but they don't leak often, let me know.

 

Hi Sean, we are talking about 27" stacks something at least as large as the MT in question.

 

Best replacements would be SQ stack, Maybe the LG stack, The 27" GE or WP TL stacks are not bad for light use situations., The dryers in both of these are better than the MT, the washers are.........

Thanks John, you were on my list of go-to's if I needed a valve and couldn't find one.  I'll keep ya posted after I get back down there...I go back to work from vacation Thursday night blah.
