Maytag transmission oil

I'm getting ready to do a rebuild on a Maytag A806 helical drive transmission.
I was going to use GL-4 gear oil but noticed NAPA has GL-1 90wt. gear oil at half the price.

The GL-1 is 100% mineral oil, (used in old Ford tractors and such), definetly safe for bronze bushings but no EP extreme pressure additives. The GL-4 oil has EP additives but may attack yellow metals.

Any reason not to use a GL-1 oil in a Maytag trans?

EP-90 Gear Oil

I bought a Speeco phd at TSC today. The transmission comes without oil. The owners manual says to use EP-90 lube oil. I've searched the world over without a solution as to what to get. I called Speeco and they could not tell me what to get either. When I didn't accept this they took my number...

Personally, I don't think GL-1 would be appropriate because it is for low load apps. only.

Sorry about this posting in Deluxe, don't know how it ended up here, feel free to transfer it to the Imperial section.

Back to the subject, I would consider a washing machine gear box a low load situation compared to say a farm tractor transmission for which GL-1 was originally called for.

It would be interesting to know exactly what kind of lubricant the Maytag trans oil is. I would guess its probably a 140 wt. GL-1 or GL-2 type gear lube as it dosen't have the strong sulfur odor of modern gear oils.

I just buy the real deal. Expensive? Hell yes, but no worries about long term use for the next 35-40 years.

gear weight?

Yes, but does anybody actually know the gear weight of the maytag tranymission fluid. It seems to me that it should be at least 80 to 90 wt, possibly more. It might be cheaper to get that gear weight at the auto parts store> curious les.

I ended up using the NAPA GL-4 85w-90 gear oil.

Seemed to be the best match to the original Maytag transmission oil and claims to be safe with bronze bearings.

As far as I know from my former dabbling with VWs, GL-4 gear oil is OK for yellow metals. GL-5 however, is usually not.
