Would a automotive belt work?

In a word: no.

There is no pulley adjustment or belt tensioner so the belt has to stretch somewhat to fit over the pulley.   An automotive belt doesn't have any "stretch", so you wouldn't be able achieve the correct tension on the pulleys if you managed to get the belt onto them.

Cannot speak to the Maytag desgin

But the Hoover TT belts aren't entirely smooth, at least the NOS versions one has in stash.

To OP: Maytag came late to the twin tub/compact laundry game and left it early. Unlike Hoover units which were sold all over the world the Maytag set was strictly USA and perhaps Canada. Because they were not around very long again unlike Hoover the supply of NOS spares was limited and has been decreasing to the point of almost nil as the years pass. Your best bet would be to contact an *older* appliance parts and service place such as Parma Parts (see archives here in the group) to see what if anything they have. Failing that maybe they can suggest work around.

Lack of spare parts has sent more Maytag TT washers to the knacker's yard than anything else I should think. Once major parts like tub seals, belts and so forth go there really are few options. That is unless you can find another machine to take parts from or build one good machine out of parts from two.
