I have a 1976 Maytag top-loading washer. It has been very reliable over the years. I love this washing machine. The motor was replaced about fifteen years ago and is running well.
How do I access the tub filter to clean it? I am aware later models have a large bolt on the agitator. Also, I would like to find the manual for this washer.
Many thanks for considering my request.

If the washer was originally equipped with a lint filter it is in the middle of the agitator. The top part of the agitator should lift off easily. If the filter has never been cleaned sometimes they can be hard to remove.

Yes, the lint filter is in the center of the agitator. There’s no other filters to clean in this machine, and you shouldn’t be getting any buildup internally in the machine if you’re using enough detergent and reasonably warmer hot water to wash in.

I would not attempt to take the washer apart to clean it, unless you’re in for a major project, this machine does not need any periodic maintenance.

You'll have to really muscle it out if the filter hasn't been removed in decades. Filling the tub all the way up with the hottest possible water (crank up your water heater beforehand) and letting it soak for 20-30 minutes will help considerably. The filter will be completely plugged up so find a suitable container (I've used a large vase) to soak in vinegar for a week or so while scrubbing it with a stiff toothbrush everyday until it's squeaky clean. Don't use a sharp object to poke through the holes, it'll mess it up and it won't filter as efficiently.

The agitator itself can be removed as well by pulling straight up. No set screen on that model just a rubber stop ring. Could be stuck on there pretty good if it was never removed. If you do get it off put some vaseline or silicone grease on the splines.

I use Bon Ami to clean up used MT washers, there is usually some crud on the upper part of the tub and under the agitator.

Wouldn't be a bad Idea to carefully lift off the front panel and raise the top cover and have a look around inside.
Tape down the lid so it dosen't slam into the console.
