Maytag washer maintenance on transmission ?

Wondering if there's anything to do to extend maytag washer life? (I'm thinking right now for my 710) maybe draining oil and refilling if possible or any ideas? Do you just have to wait till the tub bearings fail... I read in one thread removing the inner tub to oil past a rubber seal, I think thats right. Seems if ya go that far might as well go all the way?

The helical drive trans is one the toughest parts in your A710, its achilles heal is the o-ring oil seal. However, typically by the time that becomes an issue the mounting stem seal and the tub bearing are due replacement as well, so its best to do everything in one shot.

I would begin accumulating the necessary parts on ebay for an eventual rebuild, i.e. Mounting stem seal kit, Tub bearing kit, Agitator seal, Spanner nut tub wrench. Plus items for the trans if a new oil seal is needed.

I SHOULD HAVE ASKED...

Is there a fill & drain hole on transmission or can oil only be replaced when its apart. Sounds like ya just wait till things get noisy then do a full fix. Guess the Maytag repairman needs something to do

When I started the empty washer to see if timer was working it sounded dry, might just be from motor vibrations can't tell, but if bearings are getting ready to go, is there a way to test? When its a bit warmer will look under the washer, haven't gone there in 10 years...

No, you can't simply do an oil change. The trans case must be opened and the "oil" is actually a heavy gear oil. A failed tub bearing will let itself be known. Suffice it to say, with 30+ years of regular use the machine is no doubt in need of some service.

Forgot to mention, the damper pads should be lubed or replaced if needed.
