I was recently given a 1940 or 41 Maytag wringer washer. I think it is a "Commander" model. Has a square tub, but not double walled. It runs, but leaks around the bottom and I would have to say it is in "fair" shape, considering its age and the fact that it sat unused for years. Here is my question: There is an appliance service near me that will come to my home and "rebuild" the machine for $375.00, including parts and labor. From what I understand, they will do everything needed except cosmetic work. This business has been around for years, and has an excellent reputation. The owner of the business does all of the restoration work. I am giving it serious consideration, as I want the machine to work as it should. Lacking mechanical skills myself, I consider this a fair price. Does this seem to be a reasonable price? Any input will be greatly welcomed, as I know the "experts" will be reading this...

I'd say go for it, then take it to a body shop for a paint job. It'll be like having a new machine. Keep in mind a refurbished Maytag wringer at Lehman's sells for way over $500.

Spelling

Dontcha love how some people spell wringer? Or maybe it is that rare model with a bell on it.

(w)ringer

Yep. Wringer is spelled wrong in most of the postings on E-Bay. Another pet peeve of mine is the misuse of apostrophes. Stick an apostrophe in, and all of a sudden, the word is plural. NOT!

speling

Bargainfinder.com is notorious for spelling errors especially when it comes to the brand name. Most people phone in their ad like I do and you're lucky if they get it right. My last ad for our flea market was Flee Market. I buy the printed newspaper copy every Thursday and part of the hilight now is looking for Hamelton Beechs, Genairs, JenAires, Kitchenaides etc. Plus you have to comb categories for mis-placed ads which is easier in the print version. There are hundreds of categories so you have to check them all, antiques, collectibles, misc, moving, garage sales, freebies.
