Before the story is told, ALL credit for acquiring this wonderful machine goes to the most gracious and thoughtful all of our own G Y R A F O A M (Steven)! Thank You!

14 years and 4 months ago was the first time seeing this awesome machine in Atlanta, GA. (Thread #8310 from 09/30/2006 tells it's original story)

Most do not know, I retired 3 years ago this month and moved to Winchester, VA. Knowing that Steven lived in Roanoke, VA I decided to reconnect and we did. Many phone calls about the not being happy with my new kitchen appliances that were in this new home when I purchased it. One evening while on the phone, he said "well you have one here if you want to come get it that works great". So, for Thanksgiving 2020 Steven invited me to Roanoke. I accepted. We had an awesome time, worked on machines with Tyler, Steven, and myself. Along with several wash-ins. His collection is awesome as well.

Next, we were wondering around, and he said "there is your dishwasher". I almost fainted. It was the Maytag WU600 that he had in Atlanta, GA. Of course I wasn't going to say NO.

When it arrived home with me, looking at the stainless steel and black in the whole kitchen, my thought was have the panels painted by a professional high gloss black. And so be it. It's beautiful. Black and Maytag Gold are a marriage. Since the machine had not run in over 12 years, it got a refurbish job. The only thing that truly needed to be replaced was the door gasket. Was fortunate to find a new one on ebay. UGH, you don't want to change that very often. What a job. Two days! Anyway, as of yesterday 01/26/2021, the really pretty and expensive TOL LG now has a real nice home in the trash. Guess who took her place? He did. And let me tell you, is he ever handsome and performs in anyway commanded. Here are a few pictures.

Maytag WU-600 Dishwasher

Wow there are not many of those around, this is the original Direct Drive design which was quieter and better performing that the Belt Drive design that replaced it.

It is really neat to find an almost unused appliance like this, hopefully you get at least a few years out of it.

Congratulations...

Beautiful dishwasher, the white racks look brand new. They usually turn yellow after a few decades.

The only thing that shows its age is the inner part of the control panel. The grey metal seems yellowish. I wonder if you could get that cleaned up with Bar Keepers Friend cleaning product. That stuff cleans everything.

If this dishwasher works well, you should have clean dishes in about 35 minutes. If you don't use the drying cycle.

You're very lucky to have found such a gem.

Thanks to all who

Took time to comment on my new dishwasher. It has been really nice to share a posting of it's existence in my home!

Have washed 7 loads now. Have to say, two were "BobLoads" and no pre-rinse was done. Only one spoon had to go for round two. Other than that, all clean.

It's been so habit forming for so many years to put pots and big items in the bottom rack, that it takes a moment to realize which rack to use. Although, it accepts anything item anywhere.

When it goes in to agitate and drain from a silent start, it sounds totally like a pool pump starting! I sit and wait to admire the sounds. Like a child!

How fun Steven, congratulations!!! What a beautiful machine, the black panels are just stunning on the Maytag. We had the model down from this with the dial and three push-buttons that my parents had bought new in 1971 when I was a kid in harvest gold, I remember it well. It must feel so much better to have this in your kitchen than that modern LG 3+ hour slow poke.

It looks great. I like the console design. Sturdy, solid, and easy to clean. It doesn't even have any wear over the Maytag label.
The black panel really brings the machine forward.

I forget how these latched. Is there a side to side latch, a lift up latch, or some kind simple catch?

These Maytags always bring memories of the commercials.

The latch is a little black lever that goes from right(unlock) to all the way left (locked). When it's locked, you don't see the latch. It goes up all the way.

See this picture, this is the unlocked position.

Congratulations

B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L machine, Steven! That is one of my dream machines to find. Next time you have the lower panel off, could you snap a few pictures for us?

I have never had a Maytag of that vintage, doesn't it have three final rinses instead of the two that the later Maytag dishwashers used?

Congratulations, once again, for a great find!

Barry

Sure

Hi Barry, Thank you. I didn't find it. It was given to me by one of a long lasting club member Gyrafoam. The first part of this post explains. Will do. Can take the panel off an take a few pics just for the heck of it. Wish I was able to post my video I took last night of the fill and start. Yes Three fills. Duck and runs about the water ECO gods. IMHO it's the best dishwasher ever made.

Hello all--

Just a brief notification that my machine will be posted on Shoppers Square around the first part of July 2023!! It's Pending the arrival of a replacement for my kitchen. All details of the current condition (It Works Fine) will be posted as well at that time.

Peace to all

Steven--

Steven, I'm looking forward to seeing what replaces this mighty warrior. Was thinnking about you a couple of weeks ago, looking at the photo of our 2006 wash-in at Glenn's. I guess somewhere along the line I missed you moving to VA and retiring, but glad you've got some distance between you & hurricanes now. Hopefully some year we'll be able to have a get tgether again an htis time include Melvin.

Hello Bob! Nice to hear from you. The replacement will be a new Maytag Model MBD7959SKZ.. Check it out! Three rack, soft food disposal, "real Heating Element that is exposed" and no nasty screen in the bottom of the tub with that ridiculous unscrew and rinse out whatever it is!

Still have and use my A608 and DE608. Runs like new!

I am back in Panama City Florida two years this month. We had a home in VA and were to sell out in FL, Jeff passed away 08/11/2021, so I sold VA and came back to our home in Panama City, FL.
