There is a thread in this forum about military base housing. It made me start thinking about Goldsboro, NC, where we were stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB. I started checking out real estate listings and found this fabulous MCM home in the heart of town. Built in 1956 by an architect, it has been preserved pretty much as-built and if I read the info correctly has only had two owners. Located on over 2 acres with its own private pond it's Kow-A-Bunga fun, especially the bold use of colors.

If I only lived in Goldsboro and had $235,000 laying around burning a hole in my pocket....

The two fireplaces is odd...
The kitchen is the only thing.... I'd have to re do it like the house... That silver mist Frigidaire (i hate that color) and the cabinets...

The two fireplaces is cool, and love the rest

The fridge has to go-but like the rest of the place-the pool or whatever body of water that is would have to go,too.Pools are a hard sell these days-only folks with kids want them. For the most part would leave the place as is.Would be sad if some knucklehead moves in and redos the place with modern crap.I can dream on-can't afford the place.Think many folks in the Goldsboro area can't either.

I'd have to guess the fireplace was condemned by their insurers and the wall-mount (gas?) one put in as a replacement. I've seen that multi-colour style of kitchen cabinet doors in old home décor magazines from the late 50s and early 60s - not my cup of tea but they could be refinished. It would stunningly easy to set the clock back to the late fifties with the right appliances!

Rex - the body of water is a private pond, not a swimming pool. Not sure what type of maintenance, if any, is required for that. Could be a fine breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Tom - I don't think the cost of living in that part of the state is very high. I am not aware of any real industry there. Goldsboro is the seat of Wayne County, which is based on agriculture (tobacco). If the base were to close I don't think there would be much left to speak of....

Interesting house; for some reason it reminds me somewhat of the elementary school I attended, which was built in 1952 or 53. It had doors with windows like those.

I see several Crane fixtures in the bathrooms - those were considered top of the line at the time.

Pond-guess you would have to throw those mosquito pucks into it.The pucks contain a bactria or something that attacks the larvaes after they hatch.Otherwise the pond could be better than a pool.I like to watch fishes, turtles, crawfish and such in ponds.

Goldsboro is also near the Air Force base and Camp LeJune Marine base.Lots of military people in that area.Yes,there is some tobacco around that area-but most of it is focused in the Pitt County area, but the demand for tobacco has dropped considerably.Goldsboro area has several Butterball turkey farms and a processing plant. Also hogs and hog related equipment is another industry.A hog slaughterhouse-processing plant is in that area. The quarter mil home discussed here is considered a "move up" home and homes in that price range are not selling so well since the recession.Homes priced at 150K and under sell well, though. For the most part the "recession" is still with us-especially here. For the bases most folks live on them in base housing that is provided.

Love that house!!

I'm not sure I'd change the kitchen cabinets but the appliances would have to take a leap back in time. If I did change the cabinets they would stay I would just refinish them.

The two fireplaces?? Yeah I would have to do something with that. I hate the look of the one hanging on the wall and I'd want to do what it takes to get the WB one going again. I just wonder what kind of hole or destruction was done to the brick to hang that thing.

Mosquitos in the pond? I am under the impression if the water keeps moving you're OK. I have a smaller Koi pond in my yard. I keep the water moving all the time with aerators and a couple of water features and I've never had a problem with bugs. Maybe a larger pond would be different.

You put a few guppies or mosquito fish in it and they will eat the wrigglers and breed like crazy totally solving your mosquito problem. We did that one summer for the pond in the back yard and never had to buy guppies again. We would just net a few to carry through the winter inside with some of the pond weed and would have plenty to stock the pond come spring.
