Mea Culpa: I feel like a fool. New LG washer saga (cont.)

Last week I ranted on in another thread about my P.O.S  new LG washer breaking down after 4 months.  I could have kept my mouth shut because as it turned out it's my (our) fault.   

 

I managed to get LG repair guy here on Tuesday.   He punched some buttons to cycle thru and it came up with the previously discussed LE (motor failure) error code.   Then he pulled the machine out and within a minute found the problem.  

The hot water hose had been cross threaded onto the inlet and had been dripping perhaps once every 30 sec to 1 minute into the back of the washer and onto the motor .  Oh geezus, I felt like a damned fool. I can't blame myself or my other half because I can't remember who connected them, it was tight, just cross threaded.. 

 

What bugs me too is that , if you remember my water heater leak last year,  I purposely bought 3 hockey puck sized water leak alarms after that..if they get wet on the bottom they screech.  I placed one under the water heater, I placed one behind my aquarium and I had one placed behind that LG washer.  It's just that the water dripped along the back wall of the washer and behind the back service panel and pooled . 

 

The service place said they could replace the motor on warranty so a new one has been order but it might be another week or so to get it and then get here to fix it.

I could do that too. At least the machine protected itself from motor damage from water. You got that "dang fool" line from John Waters movie "Female Trouble, didn't you? She said she fell getting on the bus and banged her eye on the fare box. What she failed to tell her inpromptu buffet guests, the Dasher's, was that her ex husband Gator punched her for getting him fired from the Dasher's salon Le' Lipsticke'.

Problems can be frustrating when you can't find the source.  Glad they've discovered and are fixing it for you.

Nice that they are giving you a new motor. Now you can love your LG washer again.

I have a funny (to look back on it now) story about our LG dishwasher's safety features to share. Hubby ran a load of dishes and thought it would be a good idea to throw in the wire soap holder in our shower that hangs over the shower head to remove all the soap that was caked on over the years. The machine did a great job of cleaning that soap holder, and he thought he was so smart!
However, after that load the machine would not work and just gave us error codes, which turned out to be "overflow" codes. I called LG service and first thing they asked was if I was using detergent for dishwashers or if I had put in any additives other than DW detergent and rinse aid. I said absolutely not and had checked under the machine and it was dry. So we scheduled a service call. When I got off the phone I was told about how well the machine had cleaned the soap holder. DUH!!!!! I went online and learned that the machine has an overflow pan that senses if too much water or soap foam (in the case of non-DW detergent use) enters it will produce the error code. One has to remove the machine and tip it on its side to drain the pan or chamber or whatever it is. Did that, error code went away and I cancelled service call. Not sure how I feel about machines that seem smarter than we are.

It really could have been worse! Yeah, being without a washer sucks, but at least there was not a fire or any other major damage! I hope they just send you a new unit at this point instead of making you wait.

They're replacing the motor, not getting a new machine but it's better than nothing. At least I can do some laundry next door at the neighbors,, out my front door,  walk  40 odd feet into their garage where she has her laundry room just off the garages indoor entrance . No need to traipse into their house

 

We've went through the soap dish in dishwasher routine years back, , not me of course as I know better,, but the other one  LOL.   

 

I still think it's such an odd coincidence that the washers error code is his initials,  LE, the washer killer.

Easily done, I'm sure I've done that in the past, even more so if the hose has a plastic cuff mating with the cast metal thread of the tap/stopcock. Some of the tap/stopcock threads are badly finished these days, they can be quite sharp.

I usually present the plastic cuff as straight-on as I can, then I turn the cuff anti-clockwise until the cuff jumps into place a few times, then I slowly tighten. Any resistance felt, I start again.

The 'upper bracket' machines with the machine's actual water valve built into the hose, usually have a brass cuff, which fits easier on the tap - that's assuming you've space to accommodate the larger cumbersome boxy hose.

It could happen to anyone. But if there's something good from this, it restores my faith in LG a little bit since this whole thing was a total accident. I really like the wash/rinse action of the turbo wash.'

Speaking of your water heater - I was thinking of getting one of those water alarms too...When my 15 (ish) year old water heater started leaking one day, just from PURE LUCK I happened to walk into the laundry room at the perfect moment to catch it...It was dark as I walked through the laundry room on the way to the garage and I stopped because I smelled something......It was STEAM. I flipped the light on and freaked out. We turned the water off, connected hose to drain and I got towels and my machine out to suck water up before any damage was done. I swear, It's crazy to me that in this day and time with all of the building codes that there isn't a floor drain in a room where there's a water heater that has the potential to leak and cause water damage. I know other appliances can cause water damage too, but a water heater is more likely.

If I had to guess, I’d say more than half of all warranty service is customer education or installation error. One of the things I like about lg is that they will take care of it even though it’s “your fault”.

Mark re floor drains

Same here.  I can't fathom why there isn't a floor drain in this house either, built 1958, and was considered an upscale larger split level home at the time.   The boiler and the water heater are in the basement side by side. Every house I've ever lived in, and everyone in this neighborhood appear to have a floor drain The laundry room is the room directly behind the garage and is quite large, no floor drains in there either.    These are like the ones I got

Update

It's fixed. Service guy came today with a new motor, spent about 20 minutes installing it and was on his merry way.

Hopefully you won't run into anymore issues. But just to be SAFE, I'd keep it plugged into a surge protector. I'm not sure if there is a built in surge protector or not. I'm not saying they help at all. I've either just been REALLY lucky or it's the surge protector my 2005 Duet is plugged into that's kept the board fine for well over a decade. The board failed year 2 (I think) when I DID NOT use a surge protector, it was replaced. Been fine ever since.

I use one.  Don't know if it will do any good but better safe than sorry!
