Pagan fertility festivals have been around a long long time. Early Christians usurped these festivals for their Easter celebrations. They did the same thing with pagan winter solstice festivals (for Christmas).
When I was about 15 a group of friends and I started building a huge snowman in Sequoia Nat'l Park and wound up building a snow penis, complete with veins and nuts. It was funny watching skiiers and tourists do double-takes trying to figure out what it was. But we later regretted it. Lewd and pointless, especially in such a beautiful place.
Great website BTW. Did you catch the quiz on James Bond?
Guys, believe it or not, this is a very very very old traditional festival and it takes part at "Tirnavos", a very small town near Larissa (another small city).
I want to visit the festival but I dont have free time to go
Expect the "view" of the festival, there are loooottt of strange foods that you can taste!
If you can visit Greece one week before Easter go to this festival!!
