They could be laundry detergent ads or others, such as for favorite cereals, sodas, beers, (with or without a jingle or theme music), cigarettes, cigars, etc.

For starters:

The various Tide Detergent ads, such as "The Cleanest clean under the sun..." or "You get a lot of clean with Tide."
Budweiser: "Where there's Bud, there's life..." and "When you say Budweiser, you said it all."
Coca-Cola: "I like to teach the world to sing..."

OK. Your turn.--Laundry Shark

from childhood I remember

the commercials for a local carpet cleaning company named Bouchelle's.
Their commercials had this BOOMING bass voice singing their phone number: HUDSON-three-two-seven-hundreeeeed!

I guess this would be classified as a public service announcement, but I remember the commercial that showed various landscapes strewn with litter, then a shot of a Native American man standing by a debris-laden stream, and then a close-up of a tear running down the man’s face. It was late 1960s or early 1970s. Great ad.

My fav commercials

1. Life Cereal (Mikey)
2. Coke (I'd like to teach the world to sing)
3. Calgon (because they showed the sudsy GE agitating on gentle with a disabled Filter-Flo (how'd they do that?

Do the Shake 'n' Vac

This has always been my favourite commercial, and ran for the best part of a decade before they eventually canned it in favour of a less memorable remake. Mention Shake 'n' Vac to anyone, and the chances are that they will be able to recite the entire song word for word (and possibly do the dance routine that goes with it as well).

My favorite commercial

My favorite commercial from the late 1970's to the early 1980's was the Ajax floor cleaner commercial(favorite one is the long version from about 1978-79).

Favourite regional ad

was one I saw in Minnesota in the 80s, for Kemps Dairy.....(You know which one....) The singing cows!

Then, the whole Maytag Ol' Lonely series, first with Jesse White, then with Gordon Jump.

One more favourite, was, at the time, the most expensive commercial ever on American television....Heinz's Great American Soups, with the Busby Berkeley-esque can rising from the floor, all the dancers, and I believe, Ann Miller, starring.

Lawrence/Maytagbear

Old Anacin ads:

"Mother PLEASE!!! I'd rater do it mySELF!!"

"Honey can't you keep Billy's bike OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY!!"

Those folks had to take Anacin because Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, etc.hadn't been invented yet.

And don't forget Special K's contribution to cattiness:

"Why Jan, what a lovely maternity dress. Oh, you're not?"

Very old one here.

Dating myself? Probably but bear in mind that I was too young to remember exacly what the commercial was for! That said, I *think* it was a butter commercial.

"IT'S NOT NICE TO FOOL WITH MOTHER NATURE!!" *insert thunder and lightning here*

Maytagbear....

Thanks!! Though my memory failed me, that was a fond memory from years back. Thank you for filling me in!!

Hugs, D

I'll have to try and remember the site I used to go to to see a lot of old commercials and see if it's still there.

Michael, we have a pest control service out here that has a little song with their phone number, kind of like Empire (LOL).

I seem to recall McDonald's did some rather elaborate ones in the early 70s, one surrounding their "You Deserve a Break Today" slogan, and another one about how clean their restaurants were.

There was also a local one touting a car wash in Suburban Minneapolis that was kind of fun and probably was done with the people that worked there.

Another that goes way back probably into the 60s, was for Glo Coat floor wax. It was supposed to protect against black heel marks, and everytime someone would walk into the room, they'd be levetated on this clear thing and moved across the room.

Phyllis Diller

Does anyone happen to have a copy of that b/w commercial that was on youtube with Phyllis Diller? It was a detergent commercial. It's no longer on youtube for some reason. If anyone has it, could you email it to me at [email protected]? Thanks!

Motherrr PLEEEEEAZE! I'd RAHther do it mySELF!

That old Anacin ad is one of my favourites; how I wish I had a copy of it. I also have fond memories of the Alka-Seltzer commercial where the guy said, "I can't believe I ate the whole thing" (there were some rather obvious jokes about that one!). And the Great American Soup commercial with Ann Miller was one of the all-time greats. I had the privilege of being around Miss Miller back in my old summer stock days, for one week in 1970. She was incredibly shy, believe it or not- funny for such an onscreen powerhouse of a dancer.

Most of today's commercials seem to go too far in their attempts to be memorable. I really dislike today's "I coulda had a V-8" campaign. It used to show people slapping their foreheads when they realised they could have had one. Now it's "YOU coulda had a V-8", with people slapping OTHER people's foreheads to show them how stupid they were not to choose V-8. Since when is violence a selling point?

And I also have to snicker at some of the attempts at what could be termed "Corporate Cool". There is nothing less cool than a big company trying to sell stuff. I find the Dr. Scholl's "Gellin'" campaign real snickerbait. However, something new has come along to make that one look like a masterpiece- the "Astelins" a cappella doo-wop singers. Doo-wop for allergy medication! Ye gods and little fishes.

is gellin' compellin' or as dense as a melon?

Danemodsandy...the "Gellin'" spots have gotten worse...the wonderful dudes at Dr. Scholl's has come out with a new double-gel insoles so now you're not just "gellin'," you're "gellin'-gellin'."

And the Astelins are setting a bad example for the non-smoking crowd...one spot shows one of the singers chompin' on a big black cigar to show how this new medication is effective against smoke...hey, I smoke cigars myself, but I don't want to force them on anyone else...

Ajax spots...

back with a couple Ajax spots from youtube...

first, wouldn't you like these little dudes cleaning your kitchen?

another Ajax spot...

and this cool "wipe out kitchen sinks" ad from 1967 (note the Mustang with "Let Ajax Do It!" on the deck lid and the Ajax cans tied to the back bumper)...

...and notice too that the Ajax formula this year contained not only chlorine bleach but also bromine bleach...

I remember the Ajax commercials from the 50's with the tune that was used. I was in kindergarten in 1954 and went to school and sang the Ajax commercial for my class and teacher (Mrs. Hammond). Instead of saying "use Ajax the foaming cleanser etc. I sang use Kotex the foaming cleanser.
My mom received a call from Mrs. Hammond and then I got a good talking to. I had no clue that what I sang was inappropriate. Welcome to kindergarten. (Mom received another call from Mrs. Hammond about a song that I sang (to the tune of "Dixie") that was highly inappropriate, even for those times).Gee, I wonder what Mrs. Hammond was thinking about what went on at our house? lol Gary
