Mexican Powder Detergents

Greetings -

In an earlier post, I mentioned that I had tried Ariel powder as a primary detergent and was very pleased with it. I did some digging to see what similar brands are available and decided to treat myself. Fortunately, I live in an area with quite a few ethnic supermarkets, so some of these are readily available. The two on the right were found online.

These are fairly concentrated and priced reasonably. I'm still experimenting with finding the strengths of each brand. The Hispano is not a powder, but rather, grated cuaba laundry soap bars. Looking forward to trying it.

There is deeper digging to do online, as I've noticed other brands that might be available that way. Please feel free to share your recommendations and thoughts!

I’ve been using Ariel for the past 8 weeks and I love it!  I cleans better in my opinion than the Tide 10X Heavy Duty Liquid that I’d been using for the past two years.  The  scent is pleasant, it doesn’t over suds and it really removes oil and grease stains completely.  

 

I don’t think I’ll be going back to using liquid detergent again.  Plus you can’t beat the price of Ariel with a stick.  A 17 lb bag is only $13.99 and lasts for months.

I love Ariel, it smells so good ..but it doesn't do well in the Miele with softened water!

Oooh... if only you could see. At stores across the border, Powder Detergents line the shelves. Powders still mostly dominate the stores in Mexico, followed by Liquids. Pods really have not taken off.

There are so many available, it's amazing. I went to Wal-Mart in Mexico, and there were at least 15 or 16 brands, that I could see. Some of them even still contain P-h-o-s-p-h-a-t-e-s like Roma. And they are so dirt cheap there! You can literally get a 5 or 6kg bag of Ace (Tide in Mexico) for about $11 in Pesos. And it cleans really well in American top loaders. The same amount of powder would cost you almost $22 here, at least.

I'll have to go through my phone. But, the brands are endless, that are available there.

There was Ariel, Ace, Foca, Roma, 123, Viva, Vel, Mas, Salvo, Majesto Limpio (Mr Clean), Carisma, Util, and even more brands that I can not even remember. There is even Persil Powder. Yes, Persil Powder is designed for the Latin American market.

I still use the Roma for Whites. I like using the Ace too! I am also jealous that they have Vanish Oxy Stain Remover which we do not have sold here in the U.S, but it's popular in Europe.

If only it was easier to shop in Mexico!

What's the reason for combining them?  They can't be separated after-the-fact.  Why not keep them in separate containers, combine in the machine(s) at instances of use ... which also allows mixing either or both with anything else you may wish to use.

This has to be one of the most bizarre responses I've read. Yes, you can absolutely mix two different powdered laundry detergents together, and no...they will not "go boom".

With that being said, I have no idea what you are looking to accomplish by doing this. Typically, different detergents have different dosing instructions. If you are mixing two together, there's a chance that you could potentially cancel out the cleaning power of one (or both).

I'm with Glenn on this. Keep them separate. It'll make life easier.

I keep a supply of Ariel powder.  May use it alone or add a bit of it with Cheer powder or Persil Liquid.  Nothing has thus far gone boom.

Lirio

To add to my post, I've discovered Lirio laundry bars. I recently picked one up and grated it. As a booster for extra dirty loads, I've been adding 1/2 cup of it along with my main detergent. I am absolutely addicted to the scent of this bar, so much so that I remove it from the cupboard to give it a whiff whenever I'm in the kitchen! It has a strong, retro, soapy scent.

I would also like to try liquid Lirio, with formulas corresponding to each soap bar.

OK wait... so will these work in HE machines? I can't see HE on any of them...I don't have softened water though.. I think it's moderately hard.
