Some lady somewhere here in Az. had her A/C ripped of her roof last night from a microburst. Nothing like that near my house. Any of you in Az. get something like this near you?....Bill in Az.....

Microbursts can be a dangerous phenomena. Luckily they are usually only about 1 mile or less in diameter. Often when we are landing or taking off we'll get a wind shear alert from the control tower. It's not so much actual wind shear, but a lot of the times it's a microburst. In these cases we can delay take off or landing until the danger has passed. The Pan Am 727 crash in New Orleans back in the late 70's was caused by a microburst.

What exactly is a microburst? Usually you see a thunderstorm as a big huge cloud or a group of clouds. Within these clouds are "cells" of the actual thunderstorm. On one side of each of these cells you have a swift wind traveling upwards. On the other side of a cell you have an equally strong downwards traveling wind. When this downward wind is strong enough to hit the ground it's a microburst. A lot of times when people see damage from what they think is a tornado, it's actually a microburst. These microbursts can knock down sheds, trees and even damage homes signifigantly.

Tornado like.

We've had some people here say they had a tornado hit their place, but nothing has ever shown up on Doppler radar. I just WANT rain. I'm SICK of this goddamn sunshine. A good flood will do......Bill in Az.....

In my brand of Voo-doo (Christianity) we pray for seasoanble (appropriate) weather in every liturgy. Very wise! So many industries depends on "normal" (for their city/area) weather patterns.

Lawd knows, the economy is bad enough, one does not need weather-related sluggishness.

We had a microburst in our neighborhood two years ago, quite possibly the scariest storm I have ever been through- and it was at 10 at night, so you couldn't really see what was going on, only hear things hitting the house. This is a pic of the house across the street, kind of hard to tell, but the old oak from the backyard is laying completly across the top of the house, thankfully, no one was hurt, the tree fell on the kids bedrooms, who had just all made it to the basement.

I generally like warm, sunny, dry weather. But this past winter I actually found myself enjoying all the rain, other than occasionally having to scurry about clearing out a clogged gutter, drain, or waterway. There's something soothing about a light rainfall.

Yeah Bill, you might be wishing for rain indefinitely considering where you're located. However, when it comes, I believe it usually arrives in buckets there so your wish will be granted liberally at some point.

I remember that Pan Am incident in New Orleans. The force of the wind was enough to cause the plane to cartwheel before impact. The weather here in the Bay Area is dull compared to most places. I presume the local TV weather people all came here in search of a skate job. During the summer they can put the forecast on auto-pilot with this recorded mantra: Fog along the coast spreading inland nights and mornings, otherwise fair. For the most part, it will be like that until September.

We had a microburst about three weeks ago. Winds speeds were estimated up to 100 MPH for about a minute. It broke a few trees and knocked over some fences. It was very localized, within a few blocks was all. The damage was no where near what a Kansas tornado can do.
