Midwest Timer

Just an FYI for those in need of timer re-builds, Midwest Timer (the Mallory experts for years in Benton Harbor, MI) will not work on many old timers anymore. I have a DE700 Maytag timer that I wanted rebuilt. I called them and the engineer said they will not work on them anymore. Anyone else know of a company that might?

Dropping Like Flies

Repair persons and or anyone else to do with "old school" appliance technology are rapidly going the way of the Dodo.

One thinks this is the reason so many otherwise good vintage appliances are being junked, that is if they aren't trying to be palmed off for dear money; parts for and those experienced/willing to do the repair are becoming scarce.

Jon - Just out of curiosity, what's wrong with your timer? I've had a few of them apart recently and timers like the one you're referring to really aren't very complex. You may be able to fix it yourself

Rebuilds....

I wish I could get the clock and timer on my O'Keefe rebuilt. Stove was once owned by Norgeway and I am guessing he probably tried to get it running. If he couldn't, then I certainly can't.

Dave, the timer is in need of an overhaul. The contacts need to be replaced and adjusted. The dryer would not cool down and would shut off hot with no chime. However, I did find a NOS replacement and was able to change out the timer. I did have an issue with that timer as I was still not getting a chime. There is truth to NOS parts not being the best choice if they have a long shelf period. The contacts needed cleaned and adjusted, but I was able to do this myself. I now have a functioning timer. I would still like to get the old one fixed for the future. In addition, my Maytag 142 has the original timer that is showing signs of age. I would really like to find a replacement or someone who still has the know how to re-furbish the old one. I don’t want the newer version of this timer. I called the Canadian company, but had to leave a message. Hopefully, they will come through. Thanks to all of you for the help so far!

Why am I suspecting that Midwest's location in Benton Harbor has something to do with this issue? Hmm?

Couldn't be because of any companies located nearby. Nah.

Repair Department is Gone...

I got a hold of the Canadian company mentioned above. The gentleman told me they no longer have a repair department and only sell what they have in stock. No luck there. However, after a some digging/calling I did find an old gentlemen in IA that may have the parts I need. I'll let you all know how this works out.

The alternative might be to contact a clock repairer and suggest they branch out into timers, as they would have the dexterity and tools even if they were starting from scratch in terms of spare parts.

Rebuilding older appliance timers

Unfortunately Midwest Timer and others have largely quit rebuilding timers because of no parts being built to fix them with, and there is almost no demand for RB timers any longer. These events will make it much harder to keep many older appliances running in the future.

If you have a vintage appliance that you want to keep using long into the future, or one that you intend to spend time and money rebuilding, one of the first things I would look for is a good spare replacement timer.
