Well I’m still oot and missed out on the used top loader set.

I called our speed queen Platinum dealer and they said they cannot get standalone SQ washers. I could buy stacked for 2900 or a commercial front load with home controls for 2550 but it would take ten weeks to get!

I found a Miele W4840 for $275. They say it works. Have the shipping rods for transport. But it’s an hour to two hours away. So I was all interested but then was reading here that the 4800 series Miele have issues. Should I punt on that idea? The price appealed to me. They said they got a newer model.

People get rid of appliances for a reason.

As much as *I* want a large Miele, from all of the problems people have had with these units, I'd stay away.

They paid considerably more than that for that unit. If they are getting rid of it that cheap, I bet the Miele techs were there and gave them an estimate for a repair of some sort.

If you pay the freight, I have 3 sets of front load speed queen units in stock.

Miele 4800 series

Miele 4800 series are absolute nightmares, they’re plagued with issues since Miele rushed to introduce them to North America in order to compete for the full size (27 inch) market, Miele’s standard size (24”) are outstanding machines but the 4800... that’s another story.
Go to YouTube and type Miele 4800, you’re going to find just videos about issues and one or two about a machine rinsing.
If you want to try the Miele set as temporary just do it after you read a lot about them and totally being aware it can be trouble at some point while getting you definitive washer and dryer...

Capacity wise don't let the size of 48XX series washers fool you. For normal/Cottons settings they could only be loaded to a max of three-quarters full.

Meanwhile the "smaller" 3XXX series washers had drums that could be filled to capacity like any other front loader for "normal" cycle. So the "smaller" machine actually had a greater usable capacity.

Suppose if one routinely launders bulky items like king sized comforters or whatever, the larger tub of the 4XXX series *may* prove useful...

Quite honestly the 3XXX washers were better designed, built and had more of the Miele quality that persons expected. This explains why they sold in greater numbers and weren't discontinued.

The new W1 series of washers in some ways are a result of Miele learning from their mistakes with the 4XXX series. Capacity is bit greater than the 3033 or 3038, but seems more rock solid.

Personally would seek out a used 3XXX washer (there are quite a few out there it seems), over a 4840.

However if one is up for the challenge and is aware of what one is getting into, then go after the 4840. Miele still carries parts for those machines, and will for at least 15 or so more years (they promise to keep parts in stock for twenty years after a model is discontinued IIRC).

If you are seriously considering the 4840, one would go over it with a fine toothed comb, including opening the thing up and checking for signs of leaks/water damage. This includes the rear bearings which oddly enough for a new machine had many failures in early service use. [this post was last edited: 7/27/2018-22:30]
