I bought a few boxes of Miele dishwasher tablets recently and also a bottle of their powder detergent, which is made by Claro in Austria. I'm just wondering if this is normal Claro powder because it is an absolutely fantastic product.

I was having issues with quite a few brands of tablet over foaming. You could hear the machine chugging on foam from time to time. Fairy (Cascade / Dreft) is the worst offender and the Finish Quantum pods aren't great either. Some of the hard tablets are ok but nothing was as foam free as the Miele tabs and powder.

Their powder detergent has been remarkably good - getting extremely good results. It has absolutely no scent or foam whatsoever and the dishes are cleaning to perfection in shorter time on the the sensor wash.

Any idea who's now making the Miele tablets? Doesn't say on the package anymore but they're made in the Netherlands.

I also very much appreciated the fact they're packed in cardboard without unnecessary plastic wraps.

I'm just curious about the powder as I could also just buy Claro directly online at fairly reasonable prices.

If the Miele powder says made in Austria then it`s probably made by Claro because there seems to be no other manufacturer in Austria.
The ingredients lists of Claro and Miele powders are very similar but not the same, so you won`t get exactly the same product if you substitute for Claro.

The Miele tabs might be by Dalli Werke, but this is pure speculation.
They make excellent products and they operate a huge plant in the Netherlands which is specialized in making tabs of all sorts.
Isn`t Miele Ultraphase made by Dalli too?

Dalli has two plants in the Netherlands. One in Heerde where tabs are made:

https://www.dalli-group.com/en/locations/dalli-de-klok-b.v.-heerde-niederlande.html

And one in Hoensbroek where liquid detergents are made:

https://www.dalli-group.com/en/locations/dalli-de-klok-b.v.-hoensbroek-niederlande.html

Part of their products are labelled Klok, a more or less environmentally friendly brand. They still use petrochemical resources for their products. The brand focusses on people with allergies, all of their products are scentless.

The powder packaging mentions Claro as the manufacturer, but the tablets now only mention Miele's address.

I recently bought the powder from Miele's website. I left a coating on glass, glass lid etc.

I have a Siemens dishwasher with Zeolite and I usually use the Shine & Dry option (extra rinse) regularly. I had to use cream cleaner to scrub the brown/blue residue off - nothing else worked.

Miele manuals suggest to immediately change the detergent if one sees such residue. I guess they didn't expect it to happen with their own product. Never had this happen before. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The German Miele site offers "Ultra Tabs All in One" which seem to be Dalli made and there is also a new variety of "Ultra Tabs HyClean" which are ingredients wise identical to "Claro Hygiene Tabs"

Claro by the way did not always shine with brilliant ratings in consumer tests in the past but overall there seem to be more good ratings than bad ones.

That's quite an odd glass effect. Have had excellent results so far.

The tablets aren't the HyClean version. They're just the usual ones in packs of 60. They look a bit different the the previous ones. The tablets are a bit bigger.

Over all I'm finding the main issue is the water here is so soft that Fairy (Cascade) and several others are just absolutely overwhelming the machine with suds. The two Miele options both worked we totally suds free, which I assume is why I'm getting much better outcomes.

I found Miele tablets previous did a good job the plastics, including the dishwasher itself, began to turn slightly orange and I think it's because they're weren't formulated to deal with tomato residues, which are a very significant feature of my cooking and I would expect most people's. There are a lot of pasta sauces, curries and other dishes that would contain a lot of pigments from tomatoes, bell peppers, strongly coloured spices and so on.

Anyone got any other suggestions for low foaming tablets in Ireland, Britain or Europe generally?

Sanitiser/detergent tablets

From any cleaning suppliers work really well in my Miele DW I drop 2 in the door and let it bleach the plastic on the racks and anything else with tomato staining right off before the main wash cycle with a finish tab.

Cheap and cheerful :)

"...low foaming tablets..."

I've tried Lidl basic tablets which were Dalli made, box of 50, low foam. You can (well I can anyway - in the Bosch) get away with two of these, and still no foam issues.

McBride tablets: box of 50, under the 'Clean n Fresh' label, similar format to Lidl basic (thin tablets). Same low foam as the Lidl tablets.

McBride tablets: box of a dozen or thereabouts, under the 'Persil' label (possibly discontinued now), thicker tablets, touting the 'all-in-one' functionality. Low foam, even with two tablets.

Finish Quantum Ultimate: floppy gel pods, not too foamy for my machine. Absolutely useless on tea/coffee staining.

Fairy All-in-One: suds.

None of them seem to be much cop at bleaching tomato staining on plastics.

Both the standard Somat and Finish tabs (so just detergent, no multi function) foam verry little here.

I have a stash of the Ultra Tabs by Miele and they are pretty good - though not better or worse than any of the other brands.

Once I run out of the like 200 tabs I still have in storage I will give my mums go to store brand a try.

I found though that pure detergent tabs run better than combi products in terms of foaming.

I guess that is mostly due the aditional softening and rinsing agents being to much if you use an internal water softner.

Miele Tabs

<span style="font-family: helvetica;">I've been using the Miele Tabs because I was having a lot of issues with foaming and these work really well with our Soft Water.  I buy them on the Miele website and the box says made in the Netherlands.</span>

I suspect they're the same product

Here's what I have.

I can get the same range od Sun tablets as the Dutch ones above. They're sold here (but not in the UK, where Unilever sells Persil Dishwasher pods, which are completely different and possibly made by McBride.)

Lidl W5 is available no problem and Lidl do online shopping & home delivery through their app here. Might actually put in an order.

Dunnes Stores, one of the largest supermarkets here has an own brand which were made by a Spanish company, which I have never tried. Supervalu (positioned similar to Waitrose) seems to use McBride although I haven’t looked in a while and Tesco ownbrand dishwasher tablets are the same as Tesco UK. M&S also do their own ones, which I suspect are McBride.

I might give some of them a try.

The curious thing about your Miele tablets, is the ingredient ranges.

Generally a detergent will state "5-15%: oxygen-based bleaching agents".

Your Miele states "5-<15%". So, tighter tolerances.

Spanish tablets

Possibly Persan of Spain. I can't remember offhand, but the Aldi Magnum floppy pods might have been made by them.

The Magnum pods were floppy gel things, like Finish Quantum Ultimate. They were square-shape format with the powder component running diagonally across the square, corner-to-corner. Two triangular wings held different colours of gel or liquid.

They were supposed to be lemon, but had a very sour smell about them, as if something had gone off. I think they were a bit sudsy too.

Another Spanish manufacturer

Interesting, SuperValu (Ireland) seem to be using a company called Incasa for their rinse aid.

Seemed to work pretty well, although I have a tendency to use Ecover rinse aid as it has all plant based ingredients and works fine.

The two big Irish retailers you’ll be unfamiliar with in the U.K.:

Lidl UK seems to be doing all-change with their detergent suppliers.

The old rinse-aid came from Dalli, and seemed to be unique in that formulation - there was something like <5% anionic surfactants, in addition to the more usual non-ionic surfactants. The bottle used to be fairly square, then became more curvy. Still had the anionic component.

Recently, the bottle design changed again, slightly, but I noticed it. I can't be too sure, but I think the anionic surfactants have gone from the latest formulation. Which might indicate that perhaps the supplier has changed too.

SuperValu tablets seem to be similar ingredients but another German private label maker:

Budich International

A helpful hint for suds in both dishwashers and FL washers is simethicone, the same little 180 mg. gelcaps sold for gas relief in your gut. Three of them will defoam a washer or dishwasher. You can add them to the detergent dispenser.
