I have an 8 year old Jazz upright that lately sounds a little louder and smells like it's overheating. There are no apparent clogs, I just installed a brand new bag and HEPA filter. The old HEPA was gray which was strange. All the previous filters looked brand new when they were replaced.

Is it possible the carbon brushes or the motor is going? 8 years seems kind of young for a Miele vacuum to die. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

My Maverick is pushing 7 years old and has not had any issues. The clean air design should keep the motor free of any debris or potential restrictions of airflow after the 2 filters. Is your HEPA filter looking darker after using the vacuum?

I'm the original owner and have only ever used genuine Miele bags and filters. The inside of the vacuum looks immaculate so there were no leaking or sealing issues with the previous bags.

A few weeks ago I noticed the overheating smell and knew it's been a while since I changed the HEPA filter. I thought maybe the filter was being a bit too restrictive from not being changed so I ordered a new one and installed it along with a new bag and motor pre filter yesterday. That's when I noticed the old HEPA had the unusual gray color which makes me wonder if the motor is going. All my previous filters looked essentially unused when they were changed and that's why I wasn't in a big hurry to change the HEPA when the timestrip was up. I only use it once every few weeks as I've been primarily using my Dyson cordless.

I used it once for a few minutes with the new filter installed so too soon to tell if it's getting gray from continued use.

When was the last time it has been tuned up at a Miele dealer or vacuum store? Probably time to do it again. Luckily those Vortex motors are serviceable. This guy actually cleans his in the dishwasher.

I've never taken it in for a tune up so I think that's a good idea.

I used it for about 10 minutes yesterday and it was working fine with no overheating odors. I swear the motor itself sounds louder though.

I do think what I saw on the old HEPA was carbon dust from the motor.
