Miele Maintenance-free Motor?

In reviewing the W4000 series features in the Miele May 2009 pdf, I see it features what is called the "Miele Maintenance-free Motor." Does anyone know what the difference is between the W4000 series motor vs the W3000 series? I'd assume it's not a direct drive like LG, but maybe they are? It might have something to do with carbon brushes, or the lack of them?

Having the W3033 delivering next week, I'm glued to Miele's website reading up on all sorts of stuff. I just noticed this particularly interesting difference between the series.

The Lower end Miele motors are Brush Motors, which have parts that touch and therefor rub.

The High end ones are 3 phase Induction motors with no frictional parts.

Thus one is Maintenance free and the other requires Brush replacement every 10 years or so.

That makes sense. Assuming the bearings never go bad, the motor would probably last forever!

I'll be ok with throwing a set of carbons in my W3033, when I'm about 40 yrs old. LOL

All motors have bearings-and the equipment the motor turns.The bearings WILL need to be replaced sometime during the motors lifetime.At work we have a 3 Ph pump motor with screaming bearings-have brought it to many's attention-but guess it will have to seize before it is fixed.A spare pump is right beside it-waiting to replace it.The motor repair-rebuild shop here in town can replace the bearings.

I cant think of a worse comparison than with these expensive to buy/produce, unreliable, totally un eco to produce and get rid of light bulbs.......bad choice there Bosch

It does make me laugh though about efficiency though, like Mr dyson with his digital motor going on about carbon emissions from the brushes... and of course efficiency.........is this the only parameter now...........so it would seem.......marketing spin thats all i see it as....simple black and white terms that joe public can be conned with....so he buys the latest "efficient" appliance

The motor looks intersting though, nothing new in its technology though. As a hi-fi engineer AC or DC direct drive motors have been used for years in turntables, and yes i would agree that if motor noise is a no no then a linear motor washer is a better bet for you, but then it all goes pear shaped when the manufacturers go and fit a cheap and very noisy magnetic pump, progress eh

The famous LG direct drive machines appear on a fairly regular basis where i work, bearings being the main problem and they are so expensive to replace, most people then dump the machine how efficeint is that

I rememebr LG's direct drive marketing gadget showed a belt drive tub wobbling around on its suspenion and the LG DD driven tub rotating smoothly on its suspension..........what a load of shite, but fun to watch...........marketing and spin all of it

I agree with your comments on the marketing spin.

And don’t get me started on noisy magnetic pumps; I’m going to change the one on my project machine to a shaded pole pump, so much quieter.

about the magnetic pump thing.

I have an 18 month old Bosch which I really like, has a brush motor but a quiet pump. Previous LG (HATED IT!) was obviously a direct drive thing but had a horrid pump. My wife, who has no interest in washers at all, could not tolerate the noise of the LG running but is quite happy with the Bosch because it just sounds like a normal washing machine.

I loved the video of the Bosch Eco-Silence motor, but personally I like the sound of a brush motor crackling away on a wash or ramping up to spin.

Anyway, my original point was meant to be that if these new Bosch machines with induction motors have kept the quiet pump my Classixx has, they should be quite an honest `quiet' machine. The fill solonoid is also far quieter on the Bosch - one of my other pet hates is that I can't stand a `silent' machine which hisses and bangs during the fill (the LG? OY!!)

That specialized motor is nice and cute, but remember a motor like that will require a complex controller. I bet the controller isn't made as high a quality as the motor. They have to put something cheap in the system.

Well I have no idea... Personally I don't think washers should be silent! First they have to wash and spin properly and if they do, then and only then we can talk about the noiselevel!

Gary, Paul and myself saved one of theose LG contraptions just for a bit of fun.
Mums LG drum wobbles around like any other machine if not worse with just about any load. Especially with the weird distribution phase they do although its not so bad at spinning and usually just gets on with it - no bearing troubles yet I hasten to add.

On the other hand Pauls Mum's Hotpoint I noticed rarely has any wobble when ramping up yet takes so long to decide it wants to spin. Gets SOOOO frustarting to watch.
The spin is as entertaining what with the kitchen having a suspended wooden floor. 800rpm shakes it somewhat freakily to the point of it making me feel sick. I have never hung around long enough for it to reach the 1200rpm his Mum limits it to.
No wonder she wont let it go to its potential 1400rpm.
I can just see the cat vibrating unwantingly down the hallway and I can only imagine what it was like with the old 95452 roaring away.
The machine is solid on its feet so no installation issues.

Now as for the drain pump on both machines, yes its nice to know they are working but sheesh the racket!

I also like the sound of a brush motor crackling away on a wash or ramping up to spin speed. Early Hotpoint brush replacement in ten minutes flat, though you have to do it twice a year!!!

Where I live, high-end machines such as Miele do not exist. I am speaking in general terms based on what I have seen so far. Now it may be that the motor and the related parts are the real deal. In other brands though the controllers do fail often.
