Hi guys, I'm looking for an advice. In a mexican website, www.mercadolibre.com.mx a guy is selling a Miele w4842 and a 220V T9802 for 730 USD (1 USD- 15 pesos). The price is not bad and probably next week I'm going to see them, but I'm concern about the electronic parts of both w and d. A miele is always a Miele but I'll like to listen from you, who knows the washer and the dryer, if it is worth it or not.

I can't answer your question about the electronics.  I don't know how old these machines are and I don't know how reliable they are likely to be or how expensive it would be to get them fixed.  So I can't really help you by answering your actual question.

 

However I just wanted to say that they do look like fantastic machines.  I notice that the vendor is selling them with a 90-day guarantee, plus you are going to view them in person before buying.  I can't see the dryer's power in kW, but with its 220-Volt 30-Amp supply it can be presumed to be pretty powerful and should dry quickly and its moisture sensors should be accurate.  Should be a fantastic dryer.  The ad says the washer is only 110 Volts but I have read the instructions on Miele's Mexican website and I see that it can still reach 70 ℃ when required, which should be perfectly adequate.  I notice the Mexican instructions follow the USA system of stating spin speeds as low, medium, high, maximum rather than the European system of stating them in RPM.  So I would be interested to know the machine's spin speed.

 

If you can afford to take a gamble with the money, then they could turn out to be a wonderful purchase.  Let us know what you decide.  Hopefully other members can comment with more specific things to check with these models.  I am not familiar with these particular models myself.  Good luck!
 
Despite Miele pulling the 4XXX series washers and matching dryers soon after introduction their standard parts warranty applies. Under that scheme for about 12 or so years Miele does promise to stock parts. That being said there is no promise your local Miele/Mexico will be able to lay hands on parts from Germany in five or ten years if things run out.

Each Miele North American unit (United States, Mexico and Canada) are separate from each other and are contractually forbidden to ship parts/products across borders. Miele for each country can order parts if they are available from Germany, but if they aren't, that is that. You'll have to source them from elsewhere.

Miele techs will install genuine Miele parts supplied by customer if they are NOS and in sealed factory packaging. That is the only way to have the 30 day or whatever period warranty on parts/service.

Miele will order parts for appliances not sold in a particular country but they will not come with any warranty. Ditto if you have Miele install said parts.

Being as all this may there are many complaints about the Miele 4xxx series washers and matching dryers. Then again there are those who love them, so you'll have to decide what is best for you in this situation.

Have read online accounts of the motherboard failing on a three year old 4XXX unit and since it was out of warranty MieleUSA told customer he would be charged full freight for parts and labor to do the repair. IIRC price came to >$800 or so which was almost half of total original cost. Owner decided to chuck the machine instead.

You'll hear two stories as to why Miele discontinued these super large washers and dryers. Miele says they weren't selling and thus the range was unprofitable. Since they were only sold in North America one assumes predicted numbers would have to have been rather high to make things work.

The other side says both washer and dryer (particularly the gas version) had so many problems Miele just threw in the towel. The washers were prone to leaking which would trigger the "aqua-stop" sensors inside the machine. When this happened the unit would shut down until it sensed things had "dried out". Customers were advised they could "tilt the unit forward" to drain said water.

Just so you know the size/capacity of the Miele 4xxx washers is deceiving.

Yes, the drum is very large but if you read the owner's manual suggest load size for "normal" is only three-quarters of the drum full. Therefore in theory that super capacity washer may hold only slightly more or just about the same as the *smaller* 30xx series.

If you do purchase the units I would make sure there is an ironclad no questions asked return policy for at least two to three months. In that time I'd use the units to death testing every possible cycle and function.
 
Thanks for the info. That exactly the worry...electronic parts. Miele Mexico "independent" but they have to follow the US headquarter. Only product sold in the US can be sell in Mexico. The best selling in this country is the coffee machine, big one, and the last one....laundry. Maybe you are right, maybe in a short future spare parts will disappear. The top year in laundry sells was 70 sets of w4842 and this for just 2 years than gone, finito.

Miele discontinued those models a year (or is it two?) ago, so sales would be low to nil now.

Also Miele perhaps like Bosch with their Nexxt line of "super capacity" laundry appliances misjudged the North American market.

Not everyone has the room for such large appliances. Especially when both the Miele and Bosch washers did not offer the capacity you would expect from such large machines. Both brands were plagued with problems as well. IIRC the Bosch Nexxt washers had rear bearing and other issues.

If one had the space and could find a unit cheaply would go for a Miele 4840. Wouldn't pay full price so if the thing finally gave out wouldn't be that much out of pocket.

Contact Miele and speak with tech support and or parts department about what parts are available now and for how long for each of the units. Thing to have clear is what if any sort of warranty will come with the machines. Personally the less warranty the less money I would pay.

Also search the archives of the group or other member posts regarding their Miele 4XXX washers and matching dryers. IIRC one had nothing but problems that took some time to sort out.
