Miele w1986 equivalent model number?

Hi,

We have a Miele w1986 that won't run properly.

It starts to fill but then the 'Rinses' light flashes and the machine starts beeping and empties.

I've looked through some Miele posts and it seems this may be a common electrical fault in a relay and a blown fuse on the "EL200" PCB.

When looking at EL200 board compatibility they only seem list Euro/Global models like:
" W2866,W8120,W835,W837,W838,W842,W843,W844,W852,W853,W8535,W857,W859,W873,
W9140,W9345,W963,W9645,W974 "

Would anyone know what model the North American w1986 is equivalent to? Or if the w1986 definitely uses an EL200 board that can be fixed with a new relay and fuse?

Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks!
 
Capacity wise the only similar Miele model from the 19XX series would be the w1926, but it has different cycles from the w1986.

Why not just contact MieleUsA parts and order from them?

Yes, we know they are expensive and often a PITA (trust us, how we know), but at least you would have the proper part with a warranty.
 
first thing would be to check motor brushes.

From a VERY brief look on google for this symptom, it appears the flashing rinse light in Mieles refer to a "motor not turning" fault. The most likely cause of this is motor brushes worn. Only if the brushes check out OK do you start worrying about module faults.

So what's going on here? > - machine fills, so far so good.
When the programmer applies power to the motor it expects the motor to turn - there is a feedback circuit so it knows if the motor is rotating or not. When the motor fails to turn, the processor declares a fault, and starts pumping out.

Most common reason for failure of motor to turn is worn out brushes. Cheap and easy fix.
 
Thanks for the replies. Going the correct route through Miele would be ideal but I'm sure we are far out of warranty on the unit and it would be nice to fix this fairly quickly and inexpensively. Soldering on a new relay and a fuse or swapping the brushes should be reasonably DIYable.

I've seen the brushes come up as the first thing to check for this type of fault, but most of the people who followed up said their brushes were barely warn, just a few mm grinded down or so, and changing them didn't solve their issue. We are the second owners of this machine but we were told it had light usage.

What sounds likely as the root cause was possibly worn shock absorbers from moving the unit without the shipping bars installed. Upon operation it may have caused an off angle rotation and jammed the motor briefly which then blew the fuse in the control board.

I'd love for it to just be worn brushes, or just a stuck relay/blown fuse, even replacement shock absorbers should be a fairly straightforward fix.

The main problem I'm having is finding any of these parts that will definitely work in the North American w1986 model. Almost all of the troubleshooting and fixes that I could find refer to the European/UK/Australian model numbers.

I believe I read that for their North American models Miele just removes some cycles in programming and changes the power supply board, but they're basically the same units as their German ones. I was hoping maybe there was an equivalency table of all the models? Or a just a known equivalent for the w1986?

Searching for Miele brushes I mostly find two different types of eBay listings in the UK and none of the compatible models listed include "w1986" or any of the w1900 series.

The same for shock absorbers, I can't seem to find a sure fit for the w1986.

I've found the components needed to fix the EL200 board, but I'm not sure that the w1986 even has an EL200-type board. For this I can open the unit as soon as I'm able to get hands on it and hopefully identify the board.

If anyone could advise on how to identify the correct brushes and shock absorbers needed for the w1986, or if the w1986 uses this famous EL200 board, I'd be very grateful.
 
It's hard to compare the W1986 to European models, because the W1986 is based on the Little Giant series. It's a model exclusively manufactured for the North American market, a similar machine was not sold in Europe. Same applies for the W1926 and other models that are 70cm deep instead of the usual 60cm. You will not find these model numbers on European sites when you search.

Could you speculate as to its nearest European cousin? Conceivably with some interchangeable parts?

I'm not very knowledgeable about the Miele product history. Would the largest European model released around the same year of the W1986 be the most likely comparison?

Would it be very mechanically different in the brushes or shock absorbers to run a 10cm deeper drum? Maybe the motor is larger so the brushes are different?

If the W1986 doesn't have the exact EL200 board I assume it must have a similar controller board with relays and fuses that behave the same way.

I wonder if anyone has taken apart a W1986 and could shed some light?
 
Dont think the shockabsorbers are worn. These things are 4 heavy duty 130N absorbers, they wont break that easylie. You can check that by pushing the tub downwards. As long as you have a good resitance, there is no problem with them.
To repair a Electronik is nearly impossible without damagine the whole board, because there are indeed 2 boards built in one. And if there would be any fault on the electronic, there would be an other failure. Again, go ahead an open up the machine. Easiest way to check the motor would be removing the top , lay it with some blankets underneath on the drawer side, remove the bottom plate and check the wiriering from the motor. You need a Multimeter, so may get first of all one of them. Then check the carbon brushes and then, if you are sure nothing of that broke, you can worry about the board.
Just i understood it right, the machine fills, stops filling and then the rinse light starts to falsh?
 
I have the 1986. It is exactly like the model sold in Australia except that the temperature degrees are listed in F instead of C and some of the cycles are renamed.
I downloaded the 1986 user manual from Miele AU and found it contained the programming instructions which worked on my USA machine.

So perhaps look in Au for info

But rather than poking around inside and guessing I'd spring for at least having them come out and diagnose the problem. From there you can decide how to proceed.

About purchasing a second hand Miele:

Unless the unit is still crated and or seemingly never used take any sellers word about "light" use with a grain of salt. On some units Miele techs can attach their computers to get the use hour numbers, but that will tell only part of the story. It only isn't the amount of time (hours used) that counts but how the machine treated as well. Constantly over stuffing, using too much detergent and other forms of abuse can take a toll on even a washer used very little.
