Miele W1986 Rattle

Guys,
My W1986 has a terrible rattle and shake. I have changed the struts and I still get a rattle. I did order the springs but I cant seem to figure out how to get them changed out. I have also noticed the glass has been scratched by the drum quite a bit before strut change and some after. I need some suggestions cause I am running out of ideas on what to do next.

Washer seems to be vibrating quite a bit.

Does it make same sounds when load is evenly balanced and thus not moving about so much?

Have you taken the top off to check condition of tub support springs, and or see if you can tell where noise is coming from while spinning?

Had the tub springs changed on my older Miele several years ago. Total call out costs were quite dear (several hundred), and it was a two man job as well. Both sweating, swearing (under their breath) and muttering about this odd sort of person who keeps calling them out to repair an "old" washer. That would be *me*. *LOL*

In our case not only were one or two of the springs stretched out/going, but the bits of support that go between metal housing and springs were gone.

All four springs with corresponding bits were replaced, and am here to tell you don't think it is a job that can be done by one person. Well that is leaving washer upright unless one has a winch or something.

Springs are what hold up that massive tub with cast iron weights. To change them drum must be lifted enough to give play (so springs can be unhooked/replaced.

Mine vibrates a little but nothing like that...and it's on a pedestal.  I'm about to replace my shocks too.

Are you sure you buttoned everything down tightly when replacing shocks? That is quite a lot of vibration for a washer with new struts. Unless load was very unbalanced, but still.

Rattle indicates (to Moi at least) something is loose or otherwise shaking/banging against something it shouldn't.

You didn't by any chance place the transport bolts in it before moving it for a repair job?

Could it be a cracked drum spider (The three-legged affair which bolts the inner perforated drum to the drive axle)?

Somewhat fixed!!!!

My bf and I replaced the springs on the Miele. Took us about 15 mins. My bf lifted the tub near the weights on the front and back while I detached spring and white clip. The spring in left front under dispenser was the hardest one. The difference in tub height is quite noticeable along with the lack of movement when I shake the tub. Sorry Launderess not sure why the Miele guys had to work soo hard on your machine. Overall the machine seems to spin a lot smoother with just a little bit of vibration. Also I found that one of the legs was not firmly on the floor. Not sure if that had anything to do with it.

Well for a start my washer is in a cubby with shelves above. It is a tight squeeze for two grown men even with the washer pulled out.

Don't know if machines are different in weight, but mine is a older W1070 which is built like a tank.

It also might be due to fact new shocks had recently been fitted onto washer, resulting in very little easy "give". One tech seemed to be really straining to lift and hold tub up while other did spring swapping.

Of course it just could be both guys were rather puny....*LOL*

With all H-axis washers all legs must be firmly and securely seated on stable flooring. This acts as part of the suspension really; forces generated during spinning/operation are sent down through legs to floor and dispersed through building.

This is why industrial washing machines over a certain weight usually aren't bolted into floors, but have their own robust suspension systems. Spinning a few to several hundred pounds of wet laundry could generate forces that could shake entire building.

When at laundromat even standing across from the largest SQ washers (50lb) when they are spinning a heavy or unbalanced load can feel vibrations coming up from floor.

Yes, all four feet on the washer need to be evenly balanced (tight) or vibration may well occur.

 

I have two W1070 washers, and one W1986.  All are hooked up in my workshop.  When I use them, it's mostly the 1986, because it has more settings. But the 1070's also work well enough. None seem to vibrate excessively - they sit on a concrete floor. I was using the 1918 primarily for whites, at 190F. However in the past year or so, I started getting lazy and using the Neptune 7500 in the residence, using the longest cycle with pre-wash. At some point, however, I'm going to have to take the dish towels that have stains the Neptune left and run them through on of the Mieles. When the Neptune dies (it's about 20 years old now) I might move one of the Mieles into its spot. Or maybe the old Frigidaire FL.

Is this normal?

I still have an issue with the balancing of my W1986 even after changing the springs and struts. Is this amount of vibration normal? I’m at my wits end with this machine.

Don't see nor hear anything amiss; amount of vibration seems quite normal IMHO. Keep in mind things will vary by load size and composition.

Also remember while better than earlier Miele washers models, these 19XX series were built to last and didn't waste too much time messing about to find perfect sweet spot for extraction. Machine would do its best within programmed limits, but when it is time to spin, that is what washer will do. A badly OOB load will trigger systems to abort extract cycle (IIRC), so machine can try again....

Thanks for the input!!! It just makes me nervous cause it usually shakes sooo bad. I have to cram it full to the top with 8-10 towels to make sure it doesn't shake too hard when I do towels.

I would say if your still worried then take all the stuff off the top and the worktop off , check the water & drain pipes arent resting on the cabinet run it on a rinse & fast spin and note if any rattles still there, ie if its drum spider you will still here it empty on spin.

We had a weird sound noise on Als 1980`s Miele W745 , a rattling, couldnt fathom it out until did the above, turned out the belt was frayed, a long thick loose piece was slapping against the drum on spin...new belt, sorted !!
