I've got a house in Oregon OH that I rent to my sis-in-law. Kitchen has a clean SxS Kenmore fridge from (I'm guessing) the late 80s. She sent a message late last night that the fridge "went out". Don't have any more detail yet, but obviously I don't want to trash the thing (or be bothered with hauling a new/different fridge down there) if it's just a blower or defrost issue.

Is there a member I could pay for a service call, or perhaps a recommendation for a reputable service co? I can skip hearing "it's too old to fix, hand me $70 please" that I expect if I just call a place at random.

Thanks

adding some detail, from her text to me;

The freezer decided to stop working. Everything melted. Fridge seemed ok but i moved everything to my mini fridge. I noticed it last night. I did turn the nob to colder and turned the other nob to force more air to freezer. It ran for awhile and the temp dropped back down to below freezing but when I got up this morning it was back to being between 40 and 50 degrees

Ideas?

IF the condenser is underneath the fridge,

. . .  it's possible the condenser cooling fan has failed.  What she has described is the same thing that happened when the condenser fan failed on my mom's Kenmore SxS.  It's an easy fix.

Ask her if she feels any (warm) air blowing out from the front grille under the freezer side while the fridge is running.

Possibly a defrost timer stopped working or the defrost heater shorted out. If the unit doesn't defrost, it will build up frost on the cooling coils and not allow the air to circulate, thus warmer temps in the freezer. Another possibility is that the compressor is going or lost its charge. Hopefully its not the latter.
