Does that thing bring back some memories!
The years I was in high school (1965-70; Atlanta didn't have middle schools at the time) were years when the South was transitioning to air-conditioning. Most of my school, built in 1954, did not have air-conditioning, and we had those exact fans in every classroom.
In '68, an expansion and remodeling program got underway, first with new, air-conditioned areas being built, and then air-conditioning being added to old areas. The fans soldiered on to the bitter end; when I graduated, there were still areas that hadn't gotten A/C.
Funny now to think of all that money being spent; the entire school was razed a few years ago to make way for a new middle school. Some of the "new" areas were not thirty years old, and the whole place was built for the ages, in excellent repair.
All gone now. Wonder what happened to the fans? There must have been seventy or eighty of them.

Sandy, I forgot about having those in school.
My Aunt had one (MobileAire) in the kitchen at the farm house to keep the poor dear cool.
I remember now we also had Large Hunter Box Fans on movable stands. Our Elementary school was built in 1960 and being in New Jersey, there was only really May and half of June to deal with. The High School was built in the early 1922 and is still there.
I see now thy have A/C by the roof top units.

were awesome! KOne of them kept our first apt right out of college ($76.00/mo. rent) tolerable during those long hazy hot & humid, aka HHH, Maryland summers.

A little pricey. You got that right. I use mine for blowing out plaster dust when renovating rooms. Great fans for that job. I have to remember to remove the screen from the open window, or else I'm left with a big, white, semi-permanent circle on the screen.
