Norgeway’s post about his excellent Sunbeam collection reminded me that I have a question I’ve been meaning to ask. I bought this Sunbeam hand mixer years ago because it was in such good shape cosmetically and I really liked the styling. It can't have been used much by the previous owners and to be honest I haven't used it much either. It seems woefully underpowered and tends to bog down far too easily. Is this a normal trait for these guys or does mine have an issue that needs attention. I've thought about opening it up and cleaning the commutator to see if that helps at all, but if you folks tell me that they're all underpowered I won't bother.

The second issue is that the last time I went to use it I was surprised to find the cord cracked up and down its entire length. It's unfortunate because the original cord has the neat little Sunbeam name molded into the plug and a replacement won’t. Nevertheless, I need a replacement cord and would like to find one that’ll look at home on it and not shout 'replacement cord' at me every time I use it. I'd really like this to be a usable mixer, so any advice on either issue will be greatly appreciated.

Don't Touch It

I would oil the two ports one by the handle at the front and one by the fins and vents at the rear.  The mixer is only 65 watts so its for mashing, whipping and cake mixes.  The exterior rubber covering the wires cracks from old age and sun rot but the wires inside are fine so there is really no shock hazard.  If you remove the front cover, the armature comes with you, the brushes pop out of the holder and the mixer is now pretty much useless because a layman cannot put it back together without tools provided by Sunbeam.  The armature has to be removed to replace the cord which is a terrible job as well.  Just use a stand mixer, they are so much easier.

These are!!

FUN to work on...NOT! But you can do it if you are very mechanically inclined, I took my Graanys apart when I got it years ago, cleaned it out and put it back together, but it is not a fun job, yes, also, for some strange reason, they start very slow, if you will run them on high for a few minutes it helps, do not use 3 in1 oil, use a light sewing machine oil, this also helps, but they are not the best hand mixer ever, a GE or Westinghouse is much faster and more powerful.
