Well, I sold my old lawn mower today. It cost about $200 in 2002, sold it for $75. Kind of sad at the end to see it go, in part because the buyer was a bit difficult and wanted to negotiate, even though I had told him on the phone the price was firm. He handed me $65 insisting this was the price I had posted on Craigslist... not... and we had discussed price on the phone... I checked the ad and told him it was still $75. He offered $70. I told him I had other interested parties, I told him I'd call him if the other parties didn't want it. He got mad and said he wouldn't come back, but his wife calmed him down and he got a good mower for the money - $75. Sheesh! What a pain. It got my adrenalin pumping and all that.

Normally used stuff in good condition goes for 1/2 new price, so I had already discounted it for a quick sale. As he left I showed him how to drain the oil, and handed him a file folder with the original owner's manual, parts list, and engine manual, hoping that he had some clue about reading them. Gave the mower a fond pat and off it went.

Now, I still have two reel-type push mowers and a corded electric to sell... plus a couple of electric hedge trimmers and an electric weed whacker. should I post an inflated price to avoid the confrontation with those who insist on haggling?

LOL.

Geez, sorry you had to go through all that. Thank goodness (sometimes) for wives whose common sense prevails.

I've sold a lot of things on Ebay and have never had anyone question or try and negotiate a price. Not sure what else you could do besides say firm, non-negotiable or something.

Did you get a new unit for your own personal use?

Yeah, in the previous mower thread here I p;osted a photo of both the old and new mowers. The new one is a bit nicer - Honda motor and stainless deck, plus some other more convenient features. But both worked well.

I suppose I should have known when the buyer asked if the price was firm over the phone and then got kind or weird about it, saying that he expected that it would be in very good condition. I think it was all about negotiating, not about the actual worth of the item. Oh well, I can understand that, but it was sort of strange.
