Modern Dual-Motor Dryers

Does anyone still offer a dryer with a dedicated motor to drive the fan? There seem to have been a few and then they vanished from the marketplace. I know the GE Harmony originally had a dual motor system and I thought the Cabrio Series did as well. But no sign of them anywhere now. Did they not prove to be a workable concept?

In the UK

There was a Zanussi that had a motor driven fan it was a good dryer as it vented the steam while changing direction unlike todays that struggle to clear it because the fan is going in the wrong direction.

Oh, don't worry, the fan are usually of the centrifugal type so the efficiency at expelling the hot air is similar even during the reversing phase!

As read from the GE Harmony Dryer manual, this blow motor is supplied by an inverter to run a variable speed from 1100 rpm to 2700 rpm. However, there are many complaints about the noisy of this motor after a few year of service.

We bought this GE dryer in October 2007 when our 20 year old Maytag gas dryer model #DG512A bit the dust. I decided on a "Long Vent Dryer" since the ductwork for the dryer runs almost 30 feet to the outside with one elbow.

It use to take forever (well over 1 hour) for a load of towels to dry in the Maytag. In fact it would take so long that the towels would sometimes smell soured when you dried off with them. I kept the Maytag blower assemly very clean. Had the Maytag checked out and was told it was running perfectly. Replaced the duct work under the house and it still took forever to dry clothes in the Maytag.

Now we can dry a huge load of towels in about 45~50 minutes with the GE Long Vent. It cost a little more then a standard dryer. I think we paid $523.00 after taxes. However we have more then recoup our cost with shorten drying times. Keep in mind also we have a Whirlpool FL Duet washer Model #WFW9200SQ00 Ser #CSU1801499 which has a higher spin speed (1000rpm) then our Maytag 512A washer had. I think this helps to shorten the drying times also. The 512A washer died 3 months after the gas dryer.

And yes it is a very noisey dryer! But since it is in a laundry room with a door away from the living areas we hardly notice when its on.

I just checked on the GE web site and they still offer the long vent dryer in electric.
