Manufacturers are just trying to reflexively quell consumer complaints. When HE washers started to rip, tear and wear down clothes they simply added a bit more water, maybe a "deep fill" knob / "bulk cycle" and made the was action gentler without actually fixing the underlying cause.
If you want clean clothes and acceptable wear from a top load package go with a DD.
If you want clean clothes, HE, acceptable wear and a top load design go with Calypso or Maytag neptune.
If you want clean clothes, HE and gentle washing go with a heated front load.
Everything else is consumers voting for their own demise. The money that would have bought you a Calypso 20 years ago I see people blowing on modern TOL puffed up WMWs and front loads that will never run their heater, assuming they even have one.
