Modern Wiring-- Circa 1940

Main service in basement.
Note how some apartments (#202, and #302) have a new meter pan and circuit breakers, presumably of greater capacity.
This is why you tip the superintendent at holdiday time.
(Superintendent= > Local speak for buidlng manager).

Main steam heat distribution pipe above. Condensate (water) return to boiler below.

Closer view of main serves. Main fuse to each apt.
One fuse per apt means 110v service.

What should be here for each apt. (in a well-wired apt.) are two fuses for 110/220v service, and 40 amps minimum.

IIRC

Blue fuses are 15 amps
Red fuses are 20 amps
Green fuses are 30 amps

Each riser is probably #10 copper wiring that handles 30 amps.

Therefore, again, one should IMHO tip the super. The red and blue fuses cause unnecessary black-outs and limit usage in the apts.

This is why some landlords insist on beige or white or that they ONLY paint your apt...

Have a "drag-around" tragedy with your vacuum cleaner hitting the moldings and you will have red splotches coming through pretty much forever.

Sunglasses on everyone?

Teh buidlng uses #6 (dirty, heavy, CHEAPEST GRADE) fuel-oil to heat.

This pump keeps it moving and warm by picking up heat from the boiler room and sending it to the fuel-oil stortage tank by way of the oil itself.

Pumps have what looks like a car radiator to pick-up heat. Here it is within the gold-color painted grille

Liquids don't burn. Simple law of nature /physics. So the oil is preheated to be able to combust the vapor that is formed when it is atomized.

Rockmills Brand boiler form 1979.

The boiler created sdomestic hot water as well as steam heat with a tankless coil near the top.

The cold potable water goes in.... you guessed it... the blue pipe, clean hot water leaves via the red pipe.

Tthe 1/2" light-blue pipe brings natural gas to the burner to facilitate ignition. Ignition is also available with an electrode-gap spark. A continuous standing gas pilot here is more reliable and not really a waste of heat.
