Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

If you bought that Frigidaire Unimatic washer today

it would cost about $2850! (I've been playing with an inflation calculator this morning.) No wonder buying a new automatic washer and/or dryer was such a big deal back then.

Rich, that must explain a pattern I saw among family friends and relatives in my childhood during the 1960s, where there would be a full-featured washer but no dryer. Or, a TOL to MOL washer and a newer BOL dryer (many times a different mfg than the washer) as though they saved up for a few years. Anyone with a matched washer and dryer set typically owned A BOL set. Or, they used Sears Roebuck's easy credit terms, and had MOL units.

Yeah, that was me growing up — we had a BOL Maytag dryer and a Custom Deluxe Frigidaire washer. My grandparents had a matching Wards Signature ‘62 BOL set. I have always been a fan of having “twin” washers and dryers...even if they are BOL...my Mom didn’t seem to care if the washer and dryer didn’t match. But our machines were out in the garage so maybe that was her rationale..?

My mom didn't get a matched set until the Maytag's were bought in '73.

Several of the neighbors had matching sets earlier. Across the street, Thelma had a late 60's GE Versatronic set, and V. got the Kenmore 800's in '72. My friend Glenna D. had the '66 Lady Kenmore set. All these people had laundry rooms on the first floor, while ours was in the basement.
