Flat top

I have seen ads for these in 1930 Better Homes and Gardens.Mine is a flat top onlegs With Blue lettering and they also made the monitor top with blue knobs and lettering. They must have been the last say about 1936or7.In some ads Ive seen all three. The modern cabinet, flat top and monitor top,by then the monitor top must have been the economy model,Bobby

The last of the round top monitor tops were produced with cabinets in 1938. These are the cabinets that look like a regular fridge(no legs), but have a top mounted compressor.

GE also made "flat top" cabinet models where the round compressor was below the refrigerated compartment. These were produced along side the top compressor monitor top styles. These used so2 until the very late 1930's.

The flat top style drop in unit might have been in print ads to show that there was a replacement compressor for the older round top cabinets. It's also very possible that GE or dealers had extra cabinets that they wanted to sell off. This style used R12.

Since all of these top mounted compressor units just lift off, it's likely that many have been swapped around by dealers over the years. Unless you're a junkie like me, you wouldn't know.
