Strange that the GFI would only trip during the dry cycle, since the motor and heating element are wired such that they are always on together. If it's going to trip, it should trip immediately. Very strange.
I wouldn't worry about fiddling with the tap to reduce the fill, the pressure switch will not let it overfill.
