"Yeeessss, it still occurs in some of our best families

Wonderful...surely public safety films should become a recognised art-form - and the score is brilliant!

Still not sure what occurs in our best families....and I need to find a 'reputable dry cleaning company'

Did people actually wash clothes in gallons of gasoline?

Thank you, Laundry Shark,

and thank you once again, archive.org.

Never again will I wash my clothes in gasoline. I promise.

Couldn't Agree with You More!...

Gasoline is getting so blankity blank expensive that we can't even afford to drive our cars any more, let alone use it for doing laundry. Besides, washing with Tide, Cheer, All, Surf, or even the cheapest, smelliest detergents would smell much better than gasoline-scented clothes any day.--Laundry Shark

Yes, gasoline was once used for dry cleaning. I remember my mother telling me that once, when I was a kid.

Even so, the fire/explosion danger is one thing - the probable risk of cancer is another. Gasoline is a quite toxic brew of various carcinogens, including a main component, benzene. There's a link between chronic exposure to gasoline and pancreatic cancer - which is a swift and sure killer.

Give me STPP any day!

And using it in a machine....

would void the warranty, and possibly melt the rubber/plastic parts, not to mention being hellacious to get off one's hands.

As I have said elsewhere, the only things I wash by hand are my hands!

Actually... I saw a test report on various brands of gasoline a few years ago. The pump gas that was tested had very little in the way of aeromatics (of which benzene is one). Although I certainly wouldn't wash my hands in the stuff like we used to do when I was a teenager (and the gas was leaded!), today's pump gas probably isn't terribly toxic.

Racing gas is another matter...
