Energy Use Standards Are All Very Well, But...

...I'd like to see someone begin to give some consideration to lasting quality, too. It is true that appliances need to be made that are not wasteful of water and electricity, but it is also true that they need to last longer, so that they do not waste as much of the energy and materials that go into their manufacture. A dead three-year-old direct-drive washer that was built out of spit and chewing gum is a drain on resources that should not have been permitted in the first place, IMHO.

There also need to be tougher standards on replacement parts, specifically control boards on today's weird-science electronic controls. Many an appliance that is otherwise in good shape gets replaced because a board is unavailable or outrageously expensive. All of us here know that there are repair and rebuilding options for many control boards, but the average consumer does not have a clue.

This will be a test of Obama's intelligence. There's a difference between smart conservation, and stupid government interference. E.g. "low flush" toilets that require three or four flushes to get the job done, and wind up using twice as much water as traditional toilets, are stupid. Front loading washing machines that take 1.5 hours or more to complete a wash cycle are stupid (in the same amount of time I can wash three loads in my traditional top loader). And IMO Sandy (as usual) is exactly correct: we'll see if Obama understands a return to durability is the biggest step toward conservation.
