More GE Agitators, or is it a Hotpoint?

A very interesting marketing ploy GE used near end of the last production run of the old style washers was the same Handwash system used by Hotpoint! Only its a curved vane double agitator instead of the early Hotpoint srt8 vanes. Clear as mud, right? Looks like GE was trying to copy the Handwash system.....now the question is: what happened to FilterFlo? If I recall, these GE Handwash machines used the same filter ring as Hotpoint did. Talk about confusing marketing methods!

This is a magnetic plastic sign that was used in the showroom, placed on the front of the machines........its raised relief shows a little on this pic, its really neat to see in person!

Heres what I know about this model: Back in Spring of 1994 I helped an elderly friend of mine downsize from a large mansion, to a smaller condo. He was about 84 at the time, and his Kenmore washer was in bad shape and he preferred to get a new one. I helped him pick one out (naturally I would pick a GE!) and this is the model that he chose. The advertising sign was on the front of the one he picked out, and the by my request the salesman gave it to me! I had forgotten all about it until today, when I saw it in my workshop. With all the discussion recently on the Hotpoint double agitator, I thought many would be interested in seeing this hybrid of a GE/Hotpoint design. Its one of the few if any time that GE actually took a design from Hotpoint and used it on their own brand name...........

Send in the clones

This was the death gasp of the GE Filter-flo washer. Right before they gave up the ghost and switched to the Whirlpool/Kenmore DD design, they tried, just as you say, their Hotpoint clone design. Either it didn't work, or Jack Welch didn't give a $&!#.

32% less water blah blah blah YEAH and 62% more than the mini-basket level, and a very gentle wash it was on slow speed any way thank you very much.

That is very cool. I had no idea this was out there, as that is when I bought the GE pair for my new house, in 1994. I certainly did not see this model where I made my purchase. Too bad, as I could have had the chance to purchase a rare machine. No matter really though, as I do like having a mini basket for those occasional nuisance loads. I guess to me, a mini basket is like the security blanket you never want to lose. As I grew up with our mini basket sitting next to the machine, waiting for use to wash the odd sock or shirt that got stuck in the laundry chute and you did not discover it until the folding was going on.

I agree with you Mike, the MiniBasket seems like a much better system and is much more dramatic. Guess thats why you and I have so many MiniBasket machines and MiniBaskets!

I have a brochure for that model year somewhere that I can scan if anyone is interested. I think my parents were thinking about remodeling one more time and had a whole collection of them that I saved.

Jimmy, for versatility and variety, I think Mini-baskets have no match, at least as far as automatics go, and the Mini-wash & mini-quick cycles are fabulous and truly one of a kind.

Ken, I'd love to read that brochure.

That is the agitator that was in my TOL early 90's Hotpoint! it was a pretty cool agitator! didnt do bubkiss unless you put it on the mini setting!

I have a GE filter flo. It's from the 90's with a removable agitator and a filter flo ring instead of the pan. The gearbox in the machine leaked its oil but I'm planning on replacing it if I
Can find parts for it. It Definitely cleans better than modern junk sold today.
